i found one tomato worm so far on the 9 plants we have. it looked like there were one or two more worms but as of yet i have not seen any more damage or worms when i check in the morning so either they are gone or just waiting for another day to start munching again. perhaps some critter is eating them as that can happen too or they are done and have gone into the ground already. can't always tell what is going on so you have to guess and wonder - which is a good thing for some of us... :)

Gary O Sena. Such a nice tomato. The dark shoulders indicates that it is ripe. Earlier, green shoulders and red below.

Brandywine X Cherokee Purple developed by Keith Mueller.

Steve
edit: misspelled the name! actually, it has an apostrophe in there as well.

today i got out for the first major round of tomato picking. not going to be a huge crop this season - i'm guessing half or less of normal (which will still be plenty).

i was thinking there might be a few buckets of tomatoes ready with some of them being damaged by critters or rejects (a bucket and a half buried in another garden). i ended up with five more buckets of tomatoes and probably four buckets of those will be edible or canned - the rest were green enough they can wait a while.

I have not made bread for much of this hot summer. I made rice bread yesterday as the temps have cooled, and I was dying for my favorite summer breakfast/lunch. The first step is to get the biggest, reddest tomato in the garden. So big, that one slice covers the face of a slice of bread. Collect eggs from the chicken house, as yesterday's eggs just won't do. Melt a bit off goat cheese on the bread, add the tomato slice and then place a very over easy on top of it all. This will keep me until dinner time. A new variety of tomato, Chef's choice, is causing me to gasp at the size. I will take a photo on one soon, if it makes it into the house.
