Oh Collector, they missed it so badly with the La Nia January . . . About all I can say is that it looks like rain today:

Not gonna go back to Sub-arctic . . . not gonna do it. I got my standards. They're low but I got 'em.

Sub-arctic was a "ya got nuthin' else" choice when I lived several hundred feet higher. We didn't have all the varieties from the Soviet Union and Jim Baggett hadn't gotten wound up down in OSU. I remember I was there when Early Girl came out -- picture on the cover of the Burpee catalog. Instead of ordering the seed, I moved . . . . .

Now, I've at least more choices! Earliana was the 1st slicer I went with. Then, Fantastic. I'm not sure you can even buy Fantastic seed now. It might be all Super Fantastic but . . . I don't care - SKY's the Limit!!

Hey Steve, we might not have snow in June this year here in MN! But, tomorrow looks to be about 17F before we get into a week of mid 40F temps.

I was rudely awakened this morning by the sound of great chunks of icy snow dropping from the trees onto the deck. Yesterday's high was a sunny 25. Today it is already 34.5 and still rising. They're talking 41 today and 55 tomorrow! And after walking the dogs where will I be? Probably in the basement setting up my plant lights!

Well, We seeded tomatoes, Peppers and some flowers yesterday, five days earlier last year (what am I thinking). My plan was to wait and start them a week later than last year. Last year they nearly took over the kitchen before we could start taking them outdoors, this year I hope to be able to get them in the cold frame sooner to get them out of the house. We also planted about 25% more than last year, I have no Idea why we would. We only planted 12 Pepper plants and 18 tomato plants in our garden and we seeded over 400 cells yesterday. Last year we gave plants away to family and friends we will do the same this year for sure. you need to seed more than you will need just incase something goes wrong with germination or the seedlings, but 370 more might be excessive.

Gee, Collector- that doesn't sound excessive at all!! Those little cells don't take up much room... I am always surprised when I transplant into larger containers. That's when I understand "excessive". Hope all goes well with your seeds! Happy Gardening!

I've started, potted up, and am nearly ready to transplant 6 each of the following (tho I'm only keeping 2 each, and gifting/trading the remaining survivors to friends):

Sungold
Green Zebra
Tigrovy
Brandywine
aaannnnndddd.... another one I can't remember the name of at present. Red Pear? Green Grape? I think it's a cherry.
I've been offered a Juliet, and likely another couple (hopefully they're marked this year) from my Awesome Gardening Neighbor.

As soon as they're big enough to survive the occasional slug (or downpour), out they go. We've not had frost since early January, and no proper freezing temps at all this winter. Forecast is between 50 and 70 for the forseeable future.

Start canning your tomatoes in 2012. EVERY time I open one of my jars to cook with tomatoes they taste JUST THE SAME as they did when I picked them. TOTALLY YUM!!! I still have 30 quarts of tomatoes downstairs. You never know, tomatoes may become scarce!!!ROFL!

Yes that is the problem, 5 flats of starts triples when you transplat to larger pots. next year I will think things through more carefully . Or just plant more!

My thought was to suggest that if you think you are a little early, and just to hedge your bets anyway, you should go ahead and plant more seed in about 10 days, Collector . . .
