Tomatoes

Steve keeps talking about those Bloody Butchers that are so successful in his garden. I'm going to have to give them another try. They haven't been early for me, but maybe I should try seed from another source?
 
Seed, why don't you plant a good cherry variety (like one of those Steve mentioned) in a big pretty pot and put it on the patio?
I'm thinking it would make you pretty popular with your wife.:love

Good idea. Easy to weed, easy to pick, and no lost space in garden.

No Steve. I haven't found a huge tomato that has great flavor and doesn't have a huge green core. Why I like Better Boys-decent size, very small core, and dependable. I'd be open to any color except blacks-- orange, yellow, green are fine-although any yellow or white I've tasted in past were similar to tomato stem. I didn't mind blacks but no one would even try them.

I grew Riesentraube cherry tomatoes last year from Baker Creek. WOW! They made so many, they were so good! Good one to try!
 
I just started my tomato seeds this morning. I'm trying to one in every color:
mortgage lifter, old German, emerald evergreen, ivory pear, Kelloggs (FAVORITE!!), black prince, San Marzano, golden jubilee. Except for the golden & Kelloggs, they're all new to me. We'll see how it goes!
 
I have a friend who grows lots of Better Boy and has, for 5 or more seasons.

I try to ompare hers with my Big Beef and Goliath (original hybrid). They are very similar. My choices are a tad earlier, with the Goliath, first. For perfect, round, unblemished - Big Beef.

Pantano Romanesco is a great beefsteak tomato. It has a concentrated flavor -- my first thought on tasting it was, "mmm, pizza!" The plant did just fine in my garden but I believe in giving things a couple of tries before I commit too strongly. It is a little late but I'm looking forward to having it in the garden again!

Just went to a farm convention today and bought a a ton of seed from a vendor there (Fedco). I've now got five new tomato varieties; Principe Borghese, Pink Brandywine, Orange Banana (paste type), Cherokee Purple, and Fargo Yellow Pear. I have tried some of these varieties but wasn't able to save seed due to wilt. (Can you save tomato seed from infected plants?) I can't wait to get these seeds in the ground.
 
Part of it's the unique shape the other part is some of them appear quite meaty. Low seeds, less snot, thick walls. They are not overly popular so they have peaked my curiousity
He's pretty much explained it all. I have eaten a few varieties and some are very meaty, the mystery orange variety that I have is very much so and has a very nice fruity flavor. If you do decide to grow some oxhearts they have a weird foliage type different from other tomatoes, I've pulled a few plants thinking that they were sick but evidently the leaves are supposed to be like this.

Kellogg's?

Huge, delicious, golden, beefsteak-type tomatoes on disease tolerant plants that yield very well. I've also found that the fruits seem to crack less than other varieties that I've tried. They're one of my top favorites!
 
A lot of folks really like Amana Orange, a real meaty good sized Beefsteak with great flavor, and nice healthy big plants. Midseason for its size.

For a somewhat earlier Tomato you might like Costuluto Genovese, a nice soft red very cushiony-pleated Tomato with a pleasant flavor, also nice healthy plants.

If you want to have some quick Tomatoes to start off the season, Glacier will put out some small Tomatoes real early on smallish Potato leaf plants.
