Hi everyone,

I'm going to be planting more peas, mange tout this time; the ordinary early ones are alread twining nicelyand are about 14" high We have just had a day & a half of heavy rain, with more promised, so I'm expecting a big growth spurt! I also have some more runner bean seeds soaking along with a selection if climbing beans (of various colours) plus yard-long beans. I will start these off in modules indoors as it has gone back to being rather chilly again. Hmmm! just as well I had everything in my raised beds covered in fleece -- I never trust our English weather at this time of the year as it changes so fast !!!!

I'm going to start my zukes, watermelon, nutmeg melons (haven't tried them before, but they sounded too delicious to pass up!), and pumpkins today. I haven't had too much luck starting them in the past, but I only start a couple of seeds, so I have plenty to direct seed if I need to.

I'm hoping to be able to plant some stuff out in the ground this weekend, but it looks like it's supposed to rain.

Oooh, what's a nutmeg melon???? I've never heard of those! What does it say on the packet & where did you find it? I'm growing melons for the first time this year & I have opted for a Climbing Melon because it sounded fun ! It also sounded as if it would take up less room (as I can grow upwards, rather than sprawl horizontally). I just hope our summer here will be as hot as they promised, otherwise I'm going to be erecting a temporary greenhouse round them.

I too only sow a couple of seeds at a time, just in case -- you never know.....!!!

I am hoping to set out my tomatoes, peppers and zucchinis ( I know that is not spelled right...brain fart....) today. It is overcast and cool. But I may not get around to it, it is so much nicer to stay inside,

Hi everyone,

I'm putting some of my pinks & fuchsias out into my more decorative pots (I keep them in my barn during the winter (the pots I mean) as they would crack in the cold. Some of them I've had for 30 years so I treasure them.

I tend to buy in a few plants for my pots. We are so lucky as the WI (The Womens' Institute) has a wonderful stall every Tuesday at the ordinary market in the nearby town. It sells all sorts of plants, cut flowers, homemade preserves, cakes, pies, eggs & vegetables -- grown, raised, baked etc by the members! The standard is wonderful & you have to get there early as they sell out in about 2 hours. We also have 2 other stalls that sell good plants grown locally.

I have to put my cabbages in, grown in modules, along with more onions, celery, more lettuce & other saladings. I try to sow little patches of them every 10 days or so, between the taller rows. I have my 2nd lot of runner beans to sow plus my mange tout peas. I shall also put the yard-long beans in (they are 4" tall now, growing in modules). I have my first block of sweetcorn almost ready to go out, grown in toilet-roll middles, the roots are already coming through the cardboard !

My peppers are now speeding along after a slow start ; I need to start pricking out. So much to do, but very exciting.

Yesterday I built a large support for my summer-fruiting raspberries. I'm very pleased with it & I managed to do without spending a penny. I had all the stuff laying about. It is so satisfying being able to use the things you usually fall over

I had better stop now before I frighten myself at the amount I have to do!

In the ground: fingerling potatoes, red onions, garlic, tomatoes, romaine and other lettuces and snap peas, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, kiwi and a black current bush. Herbs so far: sage, rosemary, chives, lavendar, mint, the usual suspects.

Orchard: 8 apple trees of various types, peach and cherry trees and one fig tree that takes things real slow.

I planted some tomato cuttings earlier this week. That is it. I am in full production mode. Now I am waiting to harvest....

Hi there!

My winter flowering clematis has finally arrived from Thompson & Morgan. It was beautifully packed & in very good condition. They are a very good company (I think they have a branch of the company in the US), & very reliable. I was relieved to get it before the weekend as otherwise it would not have arrived till Tuesday (Monday is a public holiday here, so no postal delivery)!

I shall be planting it today. I think I will put it where it can grow over the wooden hut where I keep the chickens' food because I visit it everyday quite a few times and it is in a more protected area while still getting a lot of sun. I will cover its roots with big rocks so that its feet stay cool. In this position I will be able to appreciate it's flowers & scent, even in the middle of winter -- just when you need to be cheered up. You don't have to prune this variety & it is evergreen -- another bonus.

I collect clematis (as well as old-fashioned roses). I have three in bloom at the moment & then about another 20 plus that progress throughout the year. There is usually at least one in bloom, all through the year. The montanas which are blooming now have huge spreads covered in thousands of flowers! I wish I could get my camera working to show you -- a friend was going to fix it up for me but is sick at the moment. Maybe I will be brave & experiment myself!!!!

Happy Gardening this weekend! I'm going to be moving a fence so I can put more raised beds in. I'm cutting down the size of one of my chicken runs to do this. The chickens won't mind because they now free-range in the rest of the garden. Eventually I shall put a picket fence round the raised beds -- I'm waiting for a bargain to turn up otherwise I shall build it myself -- I've made one before. :weight

I am just about planted out now.
Sunflowers are up a foot or better.
Basil growing nicely.
Pickling cukes are up.
Pole beans are starting to take off. The sunflowers better stretch for that sunshine.
Butter beans are just sprouting.
4 hills of straight neck squash
3 hills crook neck squash.
4 sweet potato slips, got a few more about ready to go in.
Dill and parsley sowed but not up yet.
Pulled all but a few spinach (left for seed) and planted Silver Queen corn yesterday.
My chives are starting to actually look like chives.
I need to soak the okra seed and get them in and try and figure out where I can squeeze a few sugar babies in and maybe a few pumpkins. It will be a jungle in the garden then. Now I need some rain please.
