How about cutting the base in to and you will have two planters. Make one taller than the other or the same size.

Update. Yesterday I had hubby knock off the ramaining collar and set a pot in it. It now has a pretty blue lobelia in it. It should look nice in front of the (purple) grapes and behind the (pink) Autumn Joy Sedum and purple cone flower.
