You know...if you planted something in the bottom that chickens found "distasteful" (if such a thing exists), they just might leave it alone.

Just a thought, coming from someone who, usually, thinks thoughts that are about 8 degrees off center. LOL

Sure does look nice..... though, I know you're not happy about the chicken wire.

This year as I replant my idea was to expand the bottom portion and make a moat for toads and frogs. There will be a round colorful river stones on the bottom. Any water that runs out of the pots will end up there. Then there will be a small but very tall decorative black PVC fence around that. I want to protect the toads too. :rose

I like the tower arrangement but I don't think the chicken-wire would keep my tall Dorking boys out -- not if they saw nice red strawberries -- they would regard it as a challenge........ I think I am going to have to eat some of them -- maybe Roast Chicken followed by Strawberries.......

I have days where I would like to eat mine too.... Then they do something silly and sweet... andi just love them so much. What can I say, they have earned their dues around here. Since last August three of them have laid over 350 eggs for me and now my Cochin is laying. :rainbow-sun However, she has to come to the backdoor and tell me first.

Wow....a "moat" was the first thing I thought about, then thought it would just wind up being a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Hi Hattie,

Was just reading the Saunders allotment diary for 2002, and she reports of setting out her sweet corn, which had be started in the greenhouse, earlier. Over here, it is "taught" that corn does not do well, when started in pots and transplanted. The pictures of stands of corn on the allotment diaries disputed that claim.
Is this a common practice, there, given the growing season and bouts with gales, rain and such?

Hi boggy b,

Yes, I think virtually everyone starts their corn inside over here & we use varieties which mature fast. Our summers are very unreliable.....!!
I have had very good crops of corn grown that way but never if if I direct sow. Now whether they develop the same full taste you get over there I don't know?

Thanks for the "fix" (AND it's a REALLY good one)......and in comparing the winter pics with the spring and summer pics
I can unterstand the urgent need for spring. Every day is one day closer.......still, mighty hard to wait, I know.

We have a mis-understanding here...! I don't have an allotment although there are quite a lot of them locally. I'm past the age (& strength) to tackle an undertaking like that now...! I can barely manage my garden as it is. I just have an on-going interest in them & the people who work them. I've had it for well over 60 years when as a child I used to visit my grandfather on his during & just after World War II, when he was 'Digging for Victory'.
