~ WORLDWIDE Vegetable Allotments ~ REVIVAL of last years thread ~

Hattie,

Something has just occurred to me. After reading hundreds of archived garden entries....I have, yet, to come across using insecticides and poisons to fight pests....it's always fleece and coverings. Is the use of chemicals banned in the UK? At least, I don't remember "seeing" where they were being used.

:frow :frow

No, not banned -- it' just "WE SAW THE LIGHT" before you, over there did. A lot of older gardeners still use a lot of chemicals but the younger ones try not too. There is a huge sea of change going on here against poisoning our world. A lot of great work has been done by our gardeners who head up TV gardening programmes so new gardeners follow their advice.

So there is hope -- ordinary people's opinions & fears do seem to alter what is sold in the garden centres. :celebrate

People are so concerned about conserving our remaining bees & other beneficial insects. :D

I surely agree with that outlook. I try, my dead level best, to avoid chemicals....only using to them as a LAST resort, when all, organic methods fail....and then I do it, begrudgedly.

Grease bands....not at all what I expected. Hahahahaha...not gonna tell you what I was thinking.........ok, I will.
I envisioned pouring used cooking grease around the base of the tree. Hahahahaha....hit me with a stick and call me a taxi.

Morning Hattie,

Yep...brand new one, and a good one
Yep...a new desktop shortcut destination

I laughed when I saw "My little plot" over the picture of a not so little plot. Gonna be some good "stuff" on this link, I'm sure.

Lots of info on peas here, as HiDelight tells us we must sow them this week

Hi Hattie,

I had often wondered if you guys had a problem with stinkbugs (what we call them). Last year, they converged on (in droves) and tormented my tomatoes, finally, forcing me to resort to chemical warfare. They would "bite" the green tomatoes and cause them to have yellowish spots, at the bite site, when ripened. Well, that question was answered on this link...you call them shield bugs.

I have been wondering just how bad couch grass could be. The way it is "cursed" on these blogs like a grass from hades is, pretty much, agreed on by all gardeners, over there.
Well, on this link, there is a picture of couch grass roots taken from a, relatively, small area....wow, I sure do feel sorry for ANYONE that has to dig that stuff up.

I was kind of surprised, too, at just how narrow the back yard is........being used to having 1/2 acre of a backyard.....not sure that I wouldn't rather have a narrower yard, sometimes.
