LINK – Here is a link to a map showing the average coldest day of the year across the US.
As you can see, the areas in the West are much earlier than those in Midwest and New England. Here, it is normally during the first few days past the Winter Solstice. It is usually very snowy right after that period.
I was out this morning shoveling about 4" of snow that fell on this, the 16th day of February. There is now a little over a foot of snow on the ground. It is not at all unusual to have snow in February and not especially unusual to have sub-zero temperatures. But, I can now say that,
for the entire Winter season, temperatures and snow fall are somewhat normal –– on the low side for snow and the high side for temperatures. Two months of Winter have passed and I don't know what the next 4 weeks will bring but
everything wintery has been very late.
We now have about 12 inches of snow on the ground and it continues and is predicted to continue for several days. That seems fairly normal and I'm now using my past experience figuring out where to
store the snow, outta the way – piling it here and there.
We just passed our coldest days, on the 9th thru 13th of February. We have had 3 days with no snow since the 1st of the month. We had 3 weeks with no snow in January and began and ended that month with "officially a trace" of snow on the ground ... I wonder what the final 1/3rd of Winter will bring. Perhaps, we are transitioning back to normal.
