Thistle, do you always plant a pot and then put it inside those big ceramic ones? Is this so the roots don't get "cooked"?

The simple answer is no. The top pots are planted directly into them as is.
But the other two would have taken a tremendous amount of soil because they're so deep. I have to remove all the soil from the pots every fall and store it in the tool shed.

This one is in deep shade most of the day. The coleus is really wanting to get leggy because it's so dark. I had some white bacopa spilling out of this one, but apparently something broke it. It was all dried up and dead when I got there to water.
It made a big difference, really brightened up that Obsidian heuchera. But it would have gotten very unhappy there in the dim light anyway.

I love this one with the heuchera and the tan pot. The neutral colors and the form are very artistic!

I finally took some pictures of the 4 containers I did for a client.
They were planted about 3 weeks later than I would have ordinarily got them in, so they haven't reached their full potential. I'm waiting for the calibrachoa to tumble down the sides, and the coleus to get more height. But this is them in adolescence :D.

I used a lot of the same material in all 4, with a couple of change outs.

These two are mostly full sun, with some bright shade for an hour or two about midday.

This one is full sun for half a day, then bright shade after that.

Thanks for the pics, and great info....WOW those are beautiful combinations! I love them! ...and I have got to get better with the foliage plants. I have started coleus from seed, what other foliage plants can be started from seed? And I have heucheras that should be divided, dang, I never thought of that. Thanks!

I love bacopa, but it was so pricey at the few places that had it here I didn't buy any this year. Pretty and carefree, next year I may have to splurge a bit.

Here are some of DWs pots on the back patio.View attachment 3518
We started most of these from seed in Febuary and March.

What a gorgeous patio garden! ... and from seed, great job!
I have trouble with petunia starts, I have pinchphobia, and I think you have to pinch them to get a better plant. Those are beautiful, and I love the stair planter!

Finally took pics of a few of mine. I mostly stick whatever I have started from seed into planters on the deck ... Geraniums were purchased from the high school FFA plant sale, such a hot fuchsia, they almost hurt the eyes ...so cool!
I overdid it with the alyssum this year, it's everywhere!, and I gave a bunch away...

Impatiens and trailing lobelia by the back door - north side of the house so it's mostly shaded ...

Beautiful Lavender! I don't think you can overdo allysum, it brightens up everything you mix it with. I so admire the fact that you start them all from seed.

Is that an "eyeball" flower? I can't remember the real name, but I took a look at them last winter in a seed catalog. Very interesting bloom!
