[Smart Red]

Ready to join the gimpy club -- at least as a family member.

Spouse got hurt working with son on the field tractor and mower. Cut his finger about a quarter inch below his finger nail and son said the nail stood up from there. Also smashed the bone. Doctor took off his nail and put stitches in the cut. Said he will need physical therapy to keep from permanent damage to the finger/hand muscles and antibiotics since cuts down to the bone are easily prone to infections.

At least it was his left hand. Orders are to do nothing with the hand for ten days. Start therapy tomorrow morning. And make appointment with hand specialist. NOT a good afternoon!

On the other hand, (no pun intended, but it works here) my new perm and hair-do look great, IMHO. Of course, I was gone getting my hair done when the accident happened.

well to start last weekend filled in all the ankle breakers around the property and yes it's still very trender.

on wednesday the dw pulled and canned the spring beets, did more golden beets than red. she did save some for roasting, dang thats good stuff.....

on too today...
last weekend planted some corn, knowing that the birds would pull the sprouts out went out to cover them, day late dollar short they got 10 of them....
so replanted them.

pulled the last of round 2 of the radishes..tasty monsters
now having 2 empty beds going to plant more corn in them maybe some bush beans...

the kohlrabi

the basil has enjoyed their new homes..

have lettuce coming out my ears, love a good salad with dinner.

had a good laugh last tuesday and this story should go into common sense thread....
last thursday took goodie bags into work for a select people, one was the owner he loves lettuce, radishes and spinach. told him to make sure you wash everything since i do not use pesticides on them and you might run into a bug or two and that there might grit in it.
on tuesday during our weekly issue meeting he told me that he found a small slug in his half eaten sandwich.....
me.. did you wash the lettuce first?
him.. no his dw had a good giggle, i was hungry
me.. how was the slug?
him.. half gone, otherwise that was some of the best lettuce we have tasted got more dw loves the dark red one you have more?
me... a week or two this time make sure you wash it...
him.. how much do i owe you?
me ...nothing
thursday morning found an envelope in my mail box at work with 50.00 in it with a note, thanks for all your hard work. ps the light is burned out on the right at the entrance.
friday made sure that light was burning before i left......

5/30/15 continued
yesterday we had a thunderstorm roll through it dropped 1" in 30 minutes.
the watermelons are just starting to really vine out

zucc's are growing leaps and bounds producing deliciously

tomatoes

all the pepper plants have peppers on them.

the eggplants

the yellow and pole beans of course the peas are loving the weather.

the asparagus is done for the season. such a shame it's only a spring treat...

well thats the update as of now...

Major, I love that watermelon bed. It looks sooooo clean! Love those golden beets also. For some reason, I can't grow them. I can only grow Detroit or other red ones.

What type of zucchini is that? Last year I bought a start and I loved that plant. You could see every zucchini without having to move the leaves. It had a very open habit. I wished I had kept the name tag. This year I planted a green one from Baker Creek. I hate it! The zucchini's are hard to see and some of them grow under the leaf stems which makes it impossible to cut them.

I wished I had kept the name tag. This year I planted a green one from Baker Creek. I hate it! The zucchini's are hard to see and some of them grow under the leaf stems which makes it impossible to cut them.

where the watermelons are was last years potato beds. wonder why you cant grow the golden beet?
we had a hard time to get the red beets to sprout this year,that's OK still have this fall and winter to plant and enjoy them...

as for the zucchini's name who knows bought them at the farmers market like you i am not happy with them it's more growth than fruit.

I have grown Ambassador zucchini since Moses was in the Whale, Mary. It must be one of the earliest hybrids and seems popular.

Touchstone beet seed has germinated well for me. That wasn't true with Burpee's Golden. It isn't quite as pretty as the one from Burpee, or doesn't take quite as good a picture. However, germination ...
