Using Vintage Kitchen Tools

I don't think it would hurt, if you give it a good scrubbing first. I'm not a germophobe, however, so I may not be the best source of advice.

It appears to be cast iron. It can be cleaned up like any cast iron pan. A little rust will not hurt you. I would only be concerned with the crack. Any chance it would get bigger and make the press leak or not work right?

I'm sure there are products out there to take out rust. Maybe even just soap, water, and a wire bristle. Then I would coat it with oil and season in the oven like you do cast iron.

Yes! I would love to have it and would use it. It looks to be cast iron. That lasts forever and just gets better with age. A cleaning and brush with veggie oil and I don't see any reason for it to have/be a problem.

To me, a little rust on cast iron would not be a problem.
