Another Countdown begins....

This cold snap is brutal. Thursday night -30, Friday night -27, last night -24.9. Day time highs in single digits. I guess we are supposed to get a brief respite on Wednesday and Thursday, before colder air moves in! This is not really normal here. We do get -30, but it is normally just one really cold night, not forever stretching to the horizon.
We did cross country ski in Quebec at -11. It was fun, but I needed two pair of hand warmers in each mitt!

the sun is out and a little fresh snow so it is bright out there.

and cold... sometimes we can have a mid-winter thaw. i suspect this year may be one of those where we skip that...

@buckabucka , I never thought about your proximity to Quebec. I doubt if it would be a choice for a winter drive but have you been to Richmond? And no, that is in neither Virginia nor California. My grandfather was born in the little town of Melbourne. And no. That's not the one in Australia.

A fairly good storm rolled through. Crossing the Rockies into Montana should be quite an experience right now! Of course, it would have been even more exciting a day or two ago when all that snow was falling.

Right at my elevation of 2,000 feet, the snow was followed by a couple of hours of rain ..! Eeek! Temperatures hadn't been above freezing for about 2 weeks. The slush and puddles have now frozen in place! It looks like we will have at least another 5 days with no thawing and any chance of hitting that warmer temperature will probably just mean - more snow! Snow on ice ... as the Weather Service says, take it nice and slow.

I haven't reached anything close to the snow storage problems I am dealing with at times. It's good that even at this lower elevation that there is some insulating snow, in my yard and elsewhere. And, plenty of snow at higher elevations!

@digitS' as a part of my interests as a water nerd i keep an eye on the snow pack out west and so far this season it's starting out slow/slight.

so i'm glad to hear you are doing fine there with snow in the mountains. it just hasn't made it further south yet...

Yes, you are right. The further south on the map, the more red the dots. It seems like such a short time ago that California was having problems with overflowing reservoirs.

I don't believe I have been to Richmond @digitS' , although I may have passed close to there once when driving home from Montreal.
Quebec is pretty close by. We went to Notre Dame de Bois, only a 2 1/2 hour drive from here. Not all the roads are great, but it was very scenic.

Woke up to 23°f, it's supposed to be 25° this afternoon and 24° overnight. Boooring How this pnw weather ever got this far inland ... well, the Cascades are just gonna have to stand a little taller to keep it out ...

A more serious disappointment is that our "blue moon" on January 31st will be accented with a lunar eclipse! This will not be seen in totality for most of us in North America!


kinda odd to show where the full moon will shine brightly as a dark location on the map but, there you go

Anyway, we will be relying on @Susannah to report on more than summer warmth by Groundhog's Day ... I bet Australia has no such day! Considering the moaning that is likely to occur on TEG by February 2nd, we will be lucky if she even ventures onto the site ...

And, about these British colonial measurements of our temperatures ... wouldn't it sound better for me to report my local weather in Celsius? Let's see, my morning low of -5° C, afternoon high of -4° C, and tonight's low -4° C ... no, I guess not.

Have had breakfast and coffee, getting dressed to go bash ice in horse tank and carry boiling water to chickens and sheep. 14F last night, it is supposed to get to 35 by 3:00 PM today, but go back down to 16 tonight. A few more days of bucket watering......

negative 19 last night. No relief in sight. Day time high might reach 8 today. More of the same all week.
