As you may know, I am remodeling our home... I had to replace all of the vinyl covered interior trim around all of the windows, doors and closets with 1" x 4" Doug fir. Since I received a gift certificate from Benjamin Moore paint company for 2 galons of paint of my choice, :celebrate I went to one of the Benjamin Moore Paint stores to redeem the certificate . I got 2 one gallon cans of Interior Regal Select Semi Gloss Enamal . I looked at the listed price and just about had a heart attack ... $ 59.98 / gal. :th. Good thing was that I had the gift certificate. Since my wife wanted a different color for the wood trim for one of the bedrooms, I went to Home Depot and purchased a quart can of Behr semi gloss enamel paint for one of the bedrooms. I just about had another heart attack at the price ... $ 15.98 per qt. :th( last week, the price was $4 less., and the gallon price was $29.98 /gal when I was pricing the paint. Seems like during Holidays when they lure people in with "Sale pricing" , they compensate for it with an increased pricing for the non gift type items. :he

Paint used to be the cheap way to go for changing things in a home or on an exterior structure, but paint is no longer very cheap. But, even as expensive as it is at Lowe's, it's never been THAT expensive! Could be you are paying for the Benjamin Moore name rather than a higher quality paint?

Going to be doing a lot of painting here this winter also. Doing a complete bedroom makeover, another bathroom makeover and touching up paint in the kitchen as well.

I do a lot of painting ( well I hire a lot of painters) with paint you get what you pay for I will only use Benjamin Moore. It is thick like cream covers very well, some cheap watery paints takes 2 or 3 coats to cover the way 1 coat of BM covers

My friend Kristine came to Thanksgiving Dinner at my sisters new house. I was showing her the master bath, the ceiling was painted black. She said she was tired of white ceilings and wish she had the nerve to paint them a color. I was like just do it, you hate it you paint over it cheap and easy.

The National name brands are NOT always the best choice as their paint is formulated for the area where they manufacture it. Here In the Pacific North West ... the paint of choice by the best commercial / residential painters is Miller Paint developed and manufactured in Portland, Ore. for our climatic conditions. This is what I had our exterior painted with 2 months ago after I put on new Hardy Board Siding ( product of choice for our climate conditions ). I got the Benjamin Moore paint because I had a gift certificate from the company as their pro- motion. I purchased one quart of Behr paint from Home Depot because that was all that I needed for one bedroom while I was there to buy some more lumber. I do NOT like the results as it left all of the brush strokes after it dried. :he

What I've found with the thicker, "higher quality" paints is that, sure, they cover better....but they don't cover a large area, too thick to spread far.

The thinner paints sometimes don't cover as well, but they cover a larger area. In short, it's 6 of one and half dozen of another~either way you are buying more paint. You can buy it for $60 a gal or you can buy it for $22-32 per gal, but you wind up buying the same number of gal. in the end.

For just a little extra work in painting, I can paint a room for $50.... or I can do a little less work and paint a room for $120. It takes me less than an hour and a half to reapply that second coat of paint, so I'm working for some pretty high wages at that point. I'll do the extra work. ;)

The Westport house was right on Long Island Sound. The salt in the mist ate any outside paint . 10,000 square foot house had to be painted every 2 years to say looking prefect.:duc

My daughter had to talk me into painting the french doors that lead to the deck black. Boy do I love them! They look very classical french, haha.
