Red Richmond - Pole

One of the many outcrossed beans sent to me by Will Bonsall in 2015. This bean produced one off type I named Summer Straw (Second Photo).

in the continuing quest to checkout every snap bean i've grown to see if the dry beans are edible...

i cooked up the rejects from sorting this fall (at least 40 different kinds of beans in there) and since i had extra Green Savage dry beans and put them in there too.

with there being so many beans in the mix it would be hard to say any of them were bad themselves, but i also made sure to pick out a few of ones that i could identify for sure and make sure they were specifically edible by themselves. Green Savage was a bit thicker skinned but still edible. not sure i would want a whole pot of just them though. i didn't have enough to do that test.

it was lunch. :)

i don't think there are many dry beans i haven't liked yet even ones that i thought were only for fresh/snap eating.

have you found any dry beans you don't like?

Prairie Grove - Pole, Dry

One of the many outcrossed beans from Will Bonsall in 2015. I think this bean will stablize quickly. No off types when first grown in 2016 my a Michigan grower and no off types when grown here this summer.

Prairie Pinto - Pole, Dry

Another of the Will Bonsall outcrossed beans. Grown in 2017 but not named by a Michigan grower. No off types returned that year, but the bean did produce some black off types.

Weiner Treib - Bush, Dry

Acquired this bean from Astrid Storm in Jevenstedt, Germany in 2013. A yellow eye type bean that did very in 2013, but not this year. I think the problem was the soil. The bean did produce two off types. One typical looking bean with a very common color and pattern, and a very pretty yellow orange looking bean that I will try growing out again. The off type beans are in Photos #2 and #3.

Yellow Point - Pole

Another of the outcrossed beans from Will Bonsall of Industry, Maine. This bean was first grown out and named in 2016 by a Victoria, British Columbia, Canda grower. Yellow pods and I am assuming it is a snap bean. It had a terrible time growing and produced rather odd shaped nearly rectangular looking beans. Will give it another try in another year.

Zumbro Valley - Bush, Dry

A Robert Lobitz Legacy bean that I've been growing out since 2015 and have given this name to. In the location where it was grown most of the seed rotted due to overly moist soil, but the plants that did grow looked very good and produced some nice beans. Also one off type that looks interesting enough to grow too. The Off type is Photo #2

Hi Russ! I didn’t forget about you, or the easy bean network!
I got about 1/2 the seeds packaged and am slowly making way through my other bean bags.

I couldn’t get kutasi princess to germinate for me, so you won’t be getting any of those back.

Pale grey lavender and Atwater are bagged. Mona Lisa too- I gave you all I had gotten- which wasn’t much.

I still have red swan and Tanyas pink pod to get to.

made you in Florida now? Should I wait or shipping until your back in the frigid north or do you want me to send to Florida?

I forgot to say- I will go back and see what I have left of what you originally sent to see if I can try Kutasi princess and likely Mona Lisa as well in 2020.

My seed bins are a freaking disaster right now though. Ugh omg. I have to get them organized tho as it’s seed buying season!!

Russ Crow's 2019 Bean Show Day #22

Ram's Horn - Pole, Snap

I had grown this bean in the late 70's and early 1980's. Having first encountered the bean from John Withee's Wanigan catalog. The bean plants have very large leaves and long pods and produce a heavy load on your support system. They need to be supported very well. Every time I have grown this bean at least one of my pole supports always snap off and the ground level. This year was no exception. From now on I think will plant only two seeds of this bean around a pole support. This bean grew very well here this summer. Total Seed Harvest: 18.40 ounces (521 grams)

Ram's Horn - Pole, Snap
Hey! I grew Ram’s horn this year (not seed from you- from a swap) and look at what the trellis threw me! Talk about a mix. The pods didn’t look all that different from the outside either! Very prolific for me- just like you said.
