I suppose that the boomer generation was the one when all these breakfast cereals showed up. I like them but I like cookies, too. Really, that is what is in some of those cereal boxes. With Fruit Loops, it's cookies and candy. DW likes some of those empty-calorie ones and I have to admonish her to not have them in the kitchen. They don't do either of us any good.

There is currently lots of local fruit in the stores. When we see a picture of a bowl breakfast cereal, maybe it shows some blueberries in with the cereal. Really, most any fruit can be in there.

🍎 I can now re-awaken my habit of microwaving diced apples with raisins 🍇. I have my preference for apple varieties for that ;).

My kids just discovered fruit loops for the first time today. I bought some because my son is hosting his very first sleep over and his friend has allergies--so I got that cereal because I know for a fact it won't cause him any more harm than a sugar rush.

I had to tell my son to stop after his third bowl, and then my daughter (who hates sweet things I might add) went absolutely bonkers for it and had two bowls and then kept carrying off the box to hide and eat from.

O.O

Probably won't ever buy it again but holy cow. I had to buy another box because the two kids pillaged an entire box in one day.

those flavorings are addictive and the sugar too.

you'd think a bowl of something like raisin bran would be safe, but compare the added sugars of that to almost any other of the even supposedly worse ones and try not to be surprised...

i understand their addiction, i'm a huge fan of rice crispy treats, but also fruity pebbles - which are like fruit loops on crack. chocolate pebbles, mmM, etc. we've now been off cereal for about a year except the treats and i could eat a box of cereal via treats quite easily. i do much better eating bananas, peanut butter and a cup of milk to wash it down, i don't have the sugar highs and crashes and my body appreciates the actual food and real nutrients of the meal.

whatever i had yesterday for a late dinner really gave me some wild dreams last night, i had some carrots, a few bites of cheese and a few slices of ham. you'd think i had pepperoni pizza with onions. it was like pizza dreams... if i could record my dreams i could have an easy time of being a childrens author, i come up with some wild ones at times.

we normally make a lot of apple crisps this time of the year, sliced apples of whatever varieties we can get and then mixed with butter, sugar, flour and oats and baked until the apples are squishy. it's like apple pie without the crust (neither of us are big fans of pie crusts).

oatmeal was a bigger part of our morning meals for many years and then i also had the habit of making oatmeal for many years in my 30s-40s, but then i stopped doing that when i was trying to get away from extra calories.

breakfasts the past few days have been slices of date-nut bread that Mom made. dates are like nature's brown sugar. so good with walnuts in there and some butter on it. if you are even in the mood for some documentary time check out how dates are grown, wow that's quite a process...

Mom didn't check the container when she bought the dates, but they had pits in them so when i was opening the container i of course had to sample a date and found out that they'd need to be pitted. it's really not that hard of a process so i did that for Mom so she could make her bread. i sampled a few more along the way.

we're saving the rest of this loaf of the bread for company this week so i can only admire it through the wrapping now as i have my banana and peanut butter. :)

One of my favorite cereals in the morning was Shredded Wheat and I think it has directions on the box to pour hot water over it. My mother made it like that and then you put sugar and milk. I absolutely went nuts over that. lol

It's not like they've never had sugary cereal before. I buy it every now and again and most of the time it just sits there going stale. That's one of the reasons why I was so surprised they went crazy for fruit loops.

My favorite breakfast cereal as a kid was called Mr. Waffle, and came in a banana flavor. It was addictive, I could polish off a box of that in one sitting. My Grandfather would buy it for when I was visiting, he questioned whether I had a hollow leg. ;)

Although I love pumpkin bread, IMO most "pumpkin bread" recipes are really pumpkin cake. I used the pumpkin seeds, baked into a multi-grain bread along with sunflower seeds & sesame seeds, among other things. Haven't made that bread for years though, since DW had to cut her starch intake... which is too bad, because she really loved that bread, and I loved baking it for her.

About once a year, we drive down to Chicago to shop the Oriental markets. On one of those trips, people were swarming around a particular display in the produce section. Curious as to what could be that good, I walked over to investigate. The table was covered with small oval-shaped fruits with green skin, about the size & shape of a medium-sized plum. It turned out they were fresh dates. I tried a couple, but was not impressed - I'd rather eat them in their dried form.

I had Cheerios for breakfast this morning.

Both the pear and banana to accompany were small. In a regular size cereal bowl, the chopped pear went in first, then the Cheerios, then the banana was sliced on top. Small fruit but not much cereal could fit between. (Honestly, I was wishing for the Honey Nut version of the cereal ;).)

A couple of years ago, I would have tried hard for 3 serving of breakfast fruit however, fruit size doesn't always conform to serving size. It used to mean that I had lots of dry raisins, figs and dates on hand at all time. They could be added to either cold or hot cereal. Only have raisins at the moment. Should get back to my jars of dry fruit on the counter. Yes.

hard to find plain shredded wheat in the stores now. mini-frosted are around instead. i like 'em both. :) we used to pour coffee or hot chocolate over ours.

Hard to find the old, crumble-in-the bowl shedded wheat here too, although I can sometimes find it in generic store brands. I used to love that, my favorite way to eat it was with fresh wild blackberries. With hot cocoa... that sounds interesting.
