Yet another early January morning without freezing temperatures.

I feel like we went through the Spring Thaw! On TV are pictures of the downtown streets of a nearby city. There is no snow. At the start of last week, there was "officially" a couple inches of snow on the ground. Then, 8 more inches of snow fell. That's a major snow storm in this semi-arid part of the world.

Mild Temperatures warmed a little more and the wind came up with 30mph+ wind gusts. A 1/3rd inch of rain sprinkled down over many hours. By the time the snow plow made it to my road, the 10" that had fallen on it had gone well beyond rutted and the plow's effect was of no consequence to anyone except the tree squirrel. He was again digging into the stored nuts and carry them back to his tree that afternoon.

Our mountain snow pack is just fine at the moment. Over 70 miles of interstate 90 were closed overnight because of the snow in the Cascades, between here and Seattle. Meanwhile, lower elevations had that little bit of rain. More rain is almost here and likely will wash away some of our mountain snow. It may turn into just a little of the white stuff brightening our landscape down here by the weekend. Kinda hope so - so little sunlight at this time of year.

How is your weather attracting attention?

it is normal so far, right around freezing and some small snows.

it look much nicer with the new snows on the ground.

i do not like the change the NWS made to their website, especially for radar and regional views. i hate it when things change.

Moderate temperatures here; mid-20's, still nothing approaching zero. No major snowfalls, which is fine by me. I'm not into hunting or winter sports, so am not really a fan of Winter... but there are days that I enjoy the scenery. Freezing fog today, everything is covered by frost.

(added emphasis mine)

It strikes me as odd that with our weather technology constantly increasing, online weather access seems to be trending toward being less user-friendly. I used to love Intellicast, which had easy access to a lot of maps & custom reports... but they were taken over by Wunderground, which is IMO not user friendly. Ditto with changes to the local NWS website. However, the weather departments of local TV stations seem to be trending in the opposite direction, offering more & better access to weather & climate data - and even their own apps & alerts. One of the local Green Bay stations has now become my go-to weather source.

If I understand correctly, Adobe made the decision regarding the Weather Service's use of their software for showing radar. The WS had some time to make necessary changes - seems like they have been telling us about it for about 6 months. We will probably need that long to adjust to what they put in place, @flowerbug .

@Zeedman , it's fun reading about the early days of the internet and the Weather Underground is an example. These researchers, kids so often, weren't necessarily business people. After a time, they chose a different route from the direction of the organization. So, they sell.

"Weather Underground is owned by The Weather Company, a subsidiary of IBM." Wikipedia. The Weather Company owns the Weather Channel. I was pleased that they didn't change things more than they did on the website. Probably, there were plenty of people with more commitments that were faced with greater changes than the casual visitor like me. I like that there are volunteers with their home weather stations not too far from my house and not too far from the distant garden. The US WS's nearest station to the garden is really in the wrong place for temperatures and also provides only limited information. At least, I can get better temperature info from the volunteer.

Wow!

@baymule are you having snow, today ⁉️

What is your location - only about 33° North latitude and, maybe, 3-400 feet elevation?

Steve 😯
Latitude yep, you hit it. Elevation is 610 feet. Yes it started snowing a 1 this afternoon and kept it up after dark, but has stopped now. Probably 4 or 5 inches of snow. I took pictures around 4:30 this afternoon.

We had our first warm spell really early. Starting around Christmas and lasting through New Years. We has about 2 weeks of highs in the 60-70s. It’s been a bit of a shock this week since I don’t think we’ve gotten above 50. And today it’s raining.

January 2021 has begun to match my memory of January 2020 - very, very mild winter temperatures. After 9 days with no freezing mornings, it froze a couple of days. Didn't freeze this morning and we are told that more rain is on its way.

This should be okay since any precipitation above the valleys should fall as snow. I was showing DW the 2020 precipitation numbers for 2020 and the 30 year average. They are very close. Considering our incredibly dry summer, it indicates how much rain we had at lower elevations during the early months of that year. All the snow in the mountains saved the local forests. Of course, that wasn't true all over the West or even did very little good by the fire season at lower elevations.

Wednesday is a fairly low bar for a record high. It is also supposed to be the warmest day this week. If the thermometer hits 50°f that day, we will see some records set.

Oh, still some snow around where I piled it. Probably none left by the end of the week and, by then, we should be back to Winter, I guess.
