If you collect them young I found them to be good for summer squash. They are not exactly the same but it's as close as I could get to grow and, I thought, pretty good. I grew them on a garden fence. They can grow on the ground but spread as bad as regular watermelon. Trellising helps, even then they try to take over. I let some mature to winter squash and did not like them at all.
