Okay, this is likely my wishes getting in the way of reality BUT I did find this! From an online article regarding corn and cross pollination -

We initiated F1 crosses unidirectionally using popcorn parental lines as males and then used the F1 and backcross generations as males to cross to popcorn females in subsequent generations. This ensured the maintenance of cross incompatibility between dent corn and popcorn since only pollen bearing the Ga1-s allele could successfully pollinate the popcorn recurrent parent.

Also: Popcorn usually carries cross-incompatibility genes (known as gametophyte factors) that prevent popcorn from being fertilized by pollen of dent ...

This is from an article I found online - I went through it looking for statement 2 up there, but it was just too much jargon to go through. But it makes me wonder if maybe....I could grow both Morado flour corn and Rootbeer popcorn in the same year?

The full article - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6291453/

eta: I also found this, though thte 'hybrid' in there is reason for pause -

"Some popcorn hybrids are dent-sterile and cannot be pollinated by ordinary types of dent or sweet corns. In popcorn seed fields where the harvested crop is to be used as seed for the following year's crop, dent sterility is important because it prevents outcrosses to dent corn."

Mother Nature is kind to seed savers of corn on a small scale in that crosses are evident in the first season. Your two corns are so distinct that when you harvest you can put the kernels that aren't to trait in your eat pile. Of course planting them as far apart as possible is helpful.

KS for Khang Starr? I didn't know his seeds were purchasable. wow! Course I haven't watched his videos in forever. *runs to go see*
Yes, KS for Khang Starr. He doesn't sell them and he asks that people not sell them, but they are sold. I think the older releases are the ones being sold. I guess it might take a while for the newer releases to get to the people who will sell them. Buying them was the only way I could get some, as I don't have the connections in the Hot Pepper groups like I used to have.

I think this may be why I got them as a *freebie and they aren't actually offered on the pepper site I got them from. I don't know how this KS fellow could possibly request such a thing though? That seems not entirely legal to me, though I'm not up on the logistics of such things.

Well, he can ask for anything, but that doesn't mean he can demand it unless he has a contract (and remember, a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it is written on) with everyone he gives the seed to. Even then, he won't have a contract with any of the people that get seed from the people he gave seed to. If he wanted to enforce something like that, he'd need to get a seed patent (at least in the USA, not sure about the rest of the world) then hire lawyers to enforce it. Oh, I should say this isn't legal advice, I'm not a lawyer and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. :idunno

I'm glad to hear he doesn't have much recourse, much as I really liked his pepper. I'm not much into 'humans owning' plants or their genetic expressions.
I think he was thinking that he just wanted them to spread as gifts, a nice gesture, rather than someone making money off them. Less controling and more no own "owning them" in any way.

AGREED!!!!
Whether we like it or NOT, we are part of the responsbility for genetic diversity every time we grow a plant, save it's seeds and replant it.
Monsanto had drunk the "it's illegal to steal our pollination" Kool Aid,'
Tyrants ALL!! :somad:somad:somad
