i'm not kidding in saying that Mom rewinds the DVDs when they're done... i tried to tell her that it is the DVD player itself that is remembering where she stops the dvd and not the dvd itself...

i wonder if they can spare a square?
About one or two weeks before I was to leave my college apartment for good, I found myself out of toilet paper. This put me in a bit of a bind, as the choices where to either go and buy a whole new package of it (which would add a lot to what I already needed to pack up, and which I wasn't exactly budgeted for.) and trying to go two weeks without using any TP (which would be impossible). I was seriously considering making a point of stealing an extra wad from the college restrooms every time I used them (which could have easily gotten me kicked out.) Then, a miracle occurred. One day, I walked into the front hallway of my building and there, on the communal table were a bunch off odds and ends of housewares left by a previous person who was moving out before me and didn't need them, and there, right in the middle were two rolls of TP! I actually wrote a thank you note after I took them.

My college apartment had a LOT of problems with the appliances. Rather than a smoke detector that was set off by smoke, it had one set off by heat, which due to it's position and sensitivity, meant you couldn't actually use the oven without setting it off, so I was stuck with the range, the microwave, and a George Forman grill. On top of that, the refrigerator didn't really work either, to the point where I had to store my milk in the freezer because, if it put it in the fridge, it would spoil as quickly as it would if I left it out on the counter (basically, the freezer was about fridge cold and the fridge about room temperature. And I couldn't call in the landlord to fix anything since, if he came, rather than do any repairs he would just look for thing he could blame ME for doing so he could charge me for damages. He would also sit on any letter for fines or fees (like if I forgot to put tags on my trash bags to pay for them) until they were due, and then demand I pay them IMMEDIATELY so he wouldn't incur any late fees.

sounds more like a slumlord than a landlord. how rotten. i've been fairly fortunate in landlords with only one being marginal.
