Concerned About Growing Old?

I bought 12 bins, 6 for DD's and 6 for me. That and a bag of forty (33gal) garbage bags are a business write off for me. I purchase SO LITTLE for my home office that I might as well.
Point was, I haven't one clue WHAT I will put into these new 6 bins...until I do.
I saw their ad again and they are 27 gallon size.

estimated time to destruction when left outside in the sunshine is not very long. we had some totes out front and even when they were surrounded by wood they still ended up starting to shatter and then we had a lot of pieces of plastic to pick out of the gravel.

plastic is just not a good material to be exposed to the elements unless it is specificly built for that use and even then i would be wondering what all those additional chemicals added for UV resistance and keeping flexibility are doing as they leach into the soil.

yes, i admit i'm biased against using plastic as much as possible, but that is based upon years of experience cleaning up messes from failures (and there are many more around here i may never get to cleaning up).

I'm still in my 40's but I definitely have a clearer perception of the passage of time than I ever have, in a disconcerting way too. It makes me feel like I'm on a ship and I should throw overboard as much goods on the ship as I can so that the passing of time can slow down a bit; the purging of goods from the ship being an attempt to simplify my life - less stuff, less projects, more empty, open space in the house and a clearer schedule. This summer has contained too many projects to live up to that goal, but overall I do think I'm making headway in the simplification process.

Yes, sounds like the way to go, and add some good "community" ... I remember growing up when neighbours came across at the drop of a hat, to give a helping hand. That does not seem to happen anymore, or we have lost the art?

There used to be not so many neighbors, each one was known and treasured. Now just too many to keep up with!

Yes. That's something that happened in the suburbs, even the exurbs. i only lived way out in the country for a short time altho there have been plenty of years outside of city limits. When "super"markets showed up along with the highways and more dependable transportation – we were able to drive right past the neighborhood stores with their benches on a front porch and imagined that this made life better.

Community churches weren't required and folks segregated into their own denominations, if they bothered with that. Sunday afternoon ceased to be a time when people "dropped by."

Visiting, they could learn of projects, wants, needs, etc. of their neighbors. It was almost a standard practice for there to be a pie, cookies or cinnamon rolls to be on hand for unexpected Sunday afternoon company. As a kid in the household, we weren't allowed to touch them until some time Mom determined that visitors weren't likely.

The telephone probably began the weakening of the custom. @Phaedra 's Cafe looks to me to be a good example of a way society may be trending. Winters off makes good sense. Less goin's-ons in the neighborhood. DS frequently spends weekend mornings at a coffee shop next door to a thrift store and with a park, nearby. He frequents all 3 on those mornings .

i really enjoyed living in a small town where i could walk to everything i needed and it did make it easier to be more social and have regular places i'd visit. a small coffeehouse where we'd play bridge or the student union on campus where we could get together pretty easily at almost any time.

I think that "progress" (was blamed when we were not happy will "new tech") has made us lazy, complacent, unsular, and so much more ... wish we could go back to basics. I wouldn't mind having a donkey and cart to get around : ) : ) : )

I’m too far out of town for a donkey cart. 30 miles would take awhile. Guess I’d better keep my truck and roller skate, er CAR! Car gets 42 MPG.
