Potatoes and Carrots –– we are having beef stew for dinner :).

The carrots are skinny, needed thinning. The Red LaSoda potatoes have done just fine! They have always done well for us. I looked back at a TEG post from about 10 years ago where I noted their popularity in the US, from one side to the other. I was curious then if they are the red potatoes I can buy at the soopermarket. Shucks. Well, it's okay. I strongly suspect that the potatoes we can buy right now are from 2024 and new potatoes are noticeably different from those that have been in storage, no matter what the sophistication of the process.

Buying special potato varieties is expensive and shipping costs plays a role. I was thinking about something that I could get from Irish Eyes Company in 2026. Can't remember what it was right now but it would give me an added excuse to purchase some seed potatoes next year that were nice to have when we have done that and different from what is available at the local garden centers 🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔.

Kai Lan. Previous basket, pole beans. And, now a steady supply of small tomatoes.

The 2nd and 3rd Muncher cucumbers ⬆️. There was an earlier zucchini but I don’t know what happened to it … :)

Lots of great selection in that Irish Eyes Company. The 2 potatoes I'm growing this year are in their catalogue. I've grown a few they have in years past too. Always been curious about Katahdin, seen it around at the nurseries; Rose Finn Apple and Makah Ozette look buttery delicious. Very interesting about the Douglas Fir dust.

Some lucky rabbit or squirrel probably ate it!
All you need to complete those beautiful cukes is a jar of good quality blue cheese dressing! Yum!

Is the flavor of these greens comparable to any other green?
Kai Lan was used with broccoli to develop the broccolini hybrid but I am not familiar with that veggie. Brassica oleracea cousins but that is a varied group. You will probably find Kai Lan in Asian stores but that availability seems somewhat recent in this area. Our experience with it has taught us to try the flowering stems of Bok Choy, a Brassica rapa but those stems are smaller but very similar in flavor and use. We have grown bok choy for the leaves in stir-fry for many years.

The Makah Ozette potatoes have an interesting history there on the west side of the Cascades. Irish Eyes shares some of the Slow Food organization's ideas on that.

No, DW ate it or sent it home with DD ;). I am not a fan of any Summer squash (except in zucchini bread).
