First off, let me just say how excited I am that I found this and the SS forum! Y'all seem like great folks and I can't wait to become "friends".


This is my first "real" garden, after years of planting small things here and there. We just haven't had the land to handle my big dreams, but that's changed this year. Praise the Lord!! You'll probably look at this list and think to yourself, "Rookie, slow it down!!" That's fine and dandy, but I just can't help myself. Not after waiting so long for this to become reality. I'm starting this thread because I'm dying of excitement and my family is tired of hearing about it all. Haha.


Backstory aside, here's the list of seeds/plants I'll be buying. Note: it's huge! We're a big family (8 members and growing, plus extended family we'll be sharing with. Also, we see the garden as a chance to serve our neighbors, being the hands and feet of Christ ). I'll save seeds this year and add more next year.

I guess I'm not yet planting a 'real' garden... So far, I pretty much grow for canning.

hello, welcome, that's quite a list.

smother things with cardboard it really helps if you don't leave any gaps for plants to come back up through for a few years and then mulch over it. by the end of the first season the cardboard may mostly be gone and you can redo it again by scraping the mulch aside and putting down fresh layers.

even if you only do this for the areas between planting rows and pathways it can cut down on how much weeding you have to do.

Y'all, I've been planning for 8+ years...and this list is me controlling myself.

@flowerbug that's the plan. We'll be moving soon, so I'll have some cardboard to work with. I'll pick more up at the stores as needed .

My kids and I picked up a couple of flower seeds while we were out and about. One of our homeschool assignments will be breeding flowers. The pile in the back is seeds I already had, waiting to be planted (some are included in the above list).

I say go for it. You will have fabulous results on some, just so-so on some and positively kill some. But most of all, you will enjoy the whole process, learn more about growing your own food and know the satisfaction that feeding your family with the best, freshest foods that you can produce.

I have a tendency to go bonkers over ordering too many seed packets. This year I am trying to use them up and making minimal orders. It's so hard--I want everything! LOL

I agree with Bay, do it all. After 8 years of self control I think cutting loose in the garden will be a hoot.

When we moved here in 2014, my goal was to plant the WHOLE PACKAGE OF SEED. So I did. That basket of squash in my avatar was what I picked every other day! And I learned that I really didn't have to plant the whole packet of squash seed......
