~ WORLDWIDE Vegetable Allotments ~ REVIVAL of last years thread ~

Renovations are going okay. Came to a bit of a standstill though as the windows had to be ordered custom to fit this old house and the company is bogged down with orders so it'll be a while. In the meantime we are putting a new roof on the chicken shed and relocating it as well as building a new...

~ WORLDWIDE Vegetable Allotments ~ REVIVAL of last years thread ~

Not sure if I mentioned this (and I've been gone a while!) but a new allotment has opened up near me. The owners of the land own a large farm meat shop and breed belgian horses. They have opened up a large parcel of their land north of the city and are renting allotments out. Whats the kicker...

    Corn

Well if I can find my corn seeds then maybe I'll plant this week, but for now I'm too lazy LOL. At the least I'll dig up a small bed for next year and perhaps put my pumpkins in it this year.

How to amend + add soil without spending a dime?

Due to the nature of my dads business and how money flows into our household it can be a tad erratic at times to say the least. Anyway, there are months where we have absolutely no money coming in and for compost in that month (since we have horses, goats, chickens, ducks) I picked manure out of...

anyone else noticed paper wasps are missing?

Ergh, our "digger wasps" are not like that, they look like paper wasps.. and they're evil lol. There were some wasps starting to make a nest in the corner of our porch, so I had to spray them. can't have a wasp nest by the front door!

    Corn

Yes, I'm hoping for 3-4 rows. I may just go with 12" spacing and make it 4 rows. It's a tiny bed so accessability is great and it won't be surrounded by any other veggies since most of my crop is in raised beds.

    Corn

I kept telling myself I wouldn't plant any corn this year due to not having great success with it in the past. I probably didn't have a lot of success because of our soil and also because of my planting techniques. I plan on digging a small bed for some corn, probably around 4x4 or 5x5 and...

    Damaging winds and rain

We haven't had high winds or anything, or damaging rain... well we haven't had much rain at all. It rained for maybe 10 minutes last night with some thunder and lightning, big showy number but not a lot in the way of precip. I have to water my poor vegetables every day! More than once! My...

Listerine vs. Mosquitos...Science and experience clash

I gave up on most fly sprays and mosquito repellants years ago, most of them gave me a rash and I smelled AWFUL. LOL I'm pretty sure its not good for the skin, and I'll probably die of some poison one day but on especially bad days when I have to be out for a long period of time and the skeeters...

    Tomatosphere

lol I like to say he's the "Smartest dumb kid I know" because he is naturally brilliant, high IQ and incredible photographic memory. This is a kid that has an aptitude for the Sciences and his teachers are saying he could be a doctor, or vet or or or but he just doesn't care that much about...

    "Roundup" Kills More Than Weeds

    "Roundup" Kills More Than Weeds

Sigh, unfortunately its the only thing that will kill our gi-freaking-gantic thistles and the stinging nettles that sometimes come out of the cracks between stone in the cellar stairs (which are outside). We don't use it on our vegetable garden though!

    Tomatosphere

Here's something awesome today. My brother, though totally grounded for skipping detentions at school, has got a cool school project going on in Science class. They're doing the "TomatoSphere" experiment. He's growing tomatoes, 3 of his seeds were on the space station and 3 weren't and they...

    Fertilizing Apple Trees

Oh it was just dead wood that was pruned off. It has probably been dead wood for years. I wouldn't say this tree is drought stressed, its quite old and looks fantastic with lots of beautiful flowers this year.

    Fertilizing Apple Trees

Okay I just went down the driveway to chill with the crabapple and prune off all the dead wood, it hasn't been tended in A LOT of years. Its looking way better now, it'll need a spraying of something like insecticidal soap later in the season when all the nasty bugs are out to eat the fruit. It...
