    Blackened Dahlia Depression

Yep, DigitS'. Forecasters were wrong. It's currently 35 degrees here at 7:30 a.m. Two degrees colder than predicted! I'm glad I got everything covered last night. Brrr. Frost on the windshields.

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

Yep, it's mean ole Jack Frost time. I had such difficulty covering my dahlias this evening, due to high winds. I really had to fight them, but the plants are covered. I carried some tender ones inside, such as my potted Ground Cherries, which are truly delicious this year.

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

I see, Digits', thanks for the info. How cold is it to get there tonight? My buds are starting to unfurl, and it is supposed to be 37 here at 7 in the morning, so I'm going to need to cover my plants. Tuesday morning it is supposed to be only 36 degrees, and then it will be warm enough the...

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

How do you get the water in the sprinkler to 55 F, Steve?

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

How cold did you think it was going to get last night, DigitS'? What temp tends to do your dahlias in, even with the 55 degree F watering trick? It looks like some dahlias are hardy to 40 or 41, but I've always heard 38 degrees F is the bottom number? Are some varieties hardy to a lower temp?

    Can You Eat Eggplant...

after the first light frost kills their vines? They seem to be nice and firm and fine. Will they be bitter? I made low-fat Eggplant Parmesan sandwiches with this variety the night before the frost, and they were delicious! They are not the big fat dark purple variety, but rather, a slender...

    Morning Glory Woes

My Heavenly Blue Morning Glories were again a disappointment this year. Although I bought 2 plants early in June and they briefly bloomed (maybe 8 blossoms total), after that short burst of flowers, the vines grew and grew, but there were no more blossoms at all. The ones I planted by the hen...

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

digitS', did your dahlias make it through another cold night? I sure hope so. Some of the buds left on my frosted dahlias still look fairly good, as you say. Another silver lining is, that HAD I managed to cover the plants that night, those buds, which are the biggest and tallest and most...

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

Yes, PhilaGardener. You are right. Next year I will know to have my covering sheets handy from September 1 on. And I will put up giant stakes so I can cover the plants easily, without having to worry about crushing buds and branches. New plans for a new dahlia growing year!

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

Nyboy, I found a silver lining! My giant hot pink Otto's Thrill was at the back of the pot, facing where I couldn't really see it, before the blackening frost. I thought it would be toast afterwards, but I cut it off and put it in water, along with a smaller one blooming beside it, also still...

Thanks, Steve. I knew you could help me feel better, and you did! I appreciate you, my friend!

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

It actually got down to 35 last night, or maybe even colder, in our microclimate. I can't get Wunderground to work today, to find out how cold it actually did get here.

    Blackened Dahlia Depression

I considered covering my dahlias late last night, but I didn't think it was going to get that cold, and I couldn't find my sheets I cover them with. I had been cleaning and had bagged them up and put them in storage and forgotten where they were. I did find one fleece blanket, but my dahlias...

When & How to Plant These Flower Seeds???

Last year I harvested a whole bunch of common milkweed and datura white moonflower seeds from plants in the field. I am sure they were ripe when I harvested them. I thought they might rot in our wet cold winter, so I waited to sow them around March and some later, early May-ish. Not a one...

Transplanted Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Incarnata) Turning Yellow

That's wonderful news, Nenebynature! Most of the leaves fell off the white one, but the new orange one (little) I planted by it hasn't lost any. I think I overwatered the white one, but I don't think I killed it.

Transplanted Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Incarnata) Turning Yellow

This makes me feel better. Apparently, it is common for transplanted Butterfly Weed to go through shock, losing all its leaves. It is going to start cooling down here, which should help it recover from the shock...

Is it too late to plant Blue Pink Plants in the Ground?

It's still hot here in Utah, 93 degrees today. Recently I dug up some of my prized Blue Pinks which had become leggy as shade had overtaken where I planted them initially. Because they were so weak looking, I planted them in a large pot. I thought they died there, but recently I was excited...

Transplanted Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Incarnata) Turning Yellow

I'm pretty sure I once killed a perfectly healthy brand new Harlequin Penstemon (Utah wildflower) I had purchased for my garden, by fertilizing it. I have read many posts about butterfly weed, and what causes yellowing. Half say to fertilize, half say not to. I have also read that Asclepias...

Transplanted Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Incarnata) Turning Yellow

In May or June I bought a white butterfly weed and planted it in a large pot. I think it is Asclepias tuberosa. They told me it was white flowering but it didn't bloom all summer. Recently I got to thinking it should be moved to the ground in order to overwinter properly. I had noticed...
