2012 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - weigh in by 15 October

Here is my volunteer pumpkin (I think--might be another squash.) I've watered it heavily and it will go into it's bed tomorrow.

OK... I wasnt going to try for a giant pumpkin or any kind actually but I have discovered some extra space in my squash patch that can take a pumpkin soooooo I bought a pack of seeds and started it this past weekend I know I wont make the grade here but will have fun checking in and seeing how big is big in the fall...

Last year I think the winner was <30 pounds. You could be a contender!

I know I'm being overly optimistic, but I did purchase seeds from last years PEI giant pumpkin winners... parentage was >1000 pounds. I'll probably get a 3 pounder out of it, with my luck.

When my 24 year old son was 3 we planted a pumpkin seed straight into the garden... he took care of it watering it with his own watering can and it grew and grew and oh my 150lbs later he won 1st place in the town FAir for the childrens entries...we never did anything unusual...we were just gonna grow us a jack-o-lantern...I have a picture of him sitting on that pumpkin...the garden fairy was good to that little boy...

What's the biggest pumpkin everybody has grown?

well...actual pumpkin...no...longest pumpkin vine...about 12 feet last year

this year it is going to happen!

OK finally got my plants in the ground. Here are my hoop house "giants" - two atlantic giant seedlings, one squash king seedling, one carolina cross watermelon seedling and a rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin seedling that is going to be my test for fertilizer a few days before everyone else in the hoop house gets it, just to be sure.

Hoop house is a 4x4, I anticipate them growing out of it shortly, but it should help make them warmer.

I displayed a few of my homegrown pumpkins in a window box, last fall. I kind of forgot about them.... low and behold I have a volunteer pumpkin! It is spending the night in the greenhouse. Very doubtful it will be giant- but kind of fun! Keeping those plant warm, looks like a good idea. Here's hoping they grow huge!!
