It's a heavy steel tube with handles. The open end goes over the post, and you lift the driver with the handles and slam it down on the post. It not only gives you more force to drive the post in, it's a lot easier to control the plumb. They're pretty cheap and totally indispensable.

They can be dangerous n hands of a man. We use them to pound posts into ground. Get too aggressive and can lift over post, catch post wrong and have it land on your head. Been there done that. About knocked me out. So DUMB.

I've never had one come off while I was pounding, but taking it off a tall post when you're done, that's been a little dicey a few times.
