Lady Bug checking in for my first season of planting these wonderful bean varieties. Germinated some black valentine beans last weekend and they are in the ground testing that our Minnesota soil is warm enough and ready to go for the special varieties. Wish me luck!

Good to see you here. I planted some Blue Lake Pole last Monday to see if my ground was warm enough. They are coming up well so I'll start the special beans in the next few days. The ground is still just a bit wet to work. Good luck on your planting test.

@baymule knowing you and where you are, I'd be surprised if they weren't blooming. But I am disappointed in you. You of all people. No photos!!!

I got mine in the ground today, not much to photo yet but when I get blooms I will post photos.

I planted two of those solid Bluejay beans, the ones Russ thinks are probably reverses. Two should be plenty to see how they turn out. Of the ones I grew and named last year I planted 5 Raspberry Ripple, 5 Karachaganak, 4 Stinking Creek, 6 Jas, and 6 Miss T.

I had some of the cross-pollinated beans I got last year left over, so I stuck them in the ground. I had four 38's, three 32's, and one 39. Last year I had lousy germination on the 32's, decent on the 39's, and good on the 38's, so I'll see what actually grows. If some don't sprout I'll replant with some other seed I have. The space won't got to waste.

I used inoculant on them when I planted, I'll see if I can tell a difference. That's 36 seeds in the ground, we'll see how the adventure goes.

For those of you excited about the recent outbreak of warm weather. I would say be careful. Colder weather rots bean seeds. We've had a round of 80 degree weather here in Northern Illinois and this coming Friday's predicted high will only be 57 here with a low in the mid 40's. A fairly strong cold front will keep the the northern midwest states chilly this next coming week. I don't begin to fancy planting beans here until after the 25th of May and I keep an watchful eye out on the temperatues even then. Just trying to be helpful.

This is the Buona Della Montagna beans. They just started blooming.

Anderson Purple King are blooming but no beans yet!

I bought two packages of what I thought was Kentucky Wonder pole beans but one turned out to be Kentucky Blue. So does anyone know how they are. I've always done well with KW's but I don't know about the KB's. I soaked them overnight and now I will probably plant them tomorrow or tonight. My son broke his leg so I have to squeeze in a little time when his daddy gets home. He thinks Mama has to do everything for him now.

That reminds me; I have to make room somehow for my monkeytail cowpeas. The tastiest field peas I ever ate and the tops are good greens for my rabbits. If you have trouble digesting regular beans try cowpeas (also called field peas) They don't have all the complicated compounds your body has to produce special enzyms to digest.
I hope the seed is still good after 4 years of just sitting around.
