As we begin our thirteenth year. I think of all the wonderful bean varieties and varieties of everything humans usually grow for themselves. All that we are blessed with today. How marvelous it is that we can experience them. I think if most of what we have today was if not saved in the past, to be past on into the future, who is us today. What a sad and maybe boring experience today’s growers might have. Even a possible threat to our food security. We would have probably would eventually found out what was missing. There are people who document in books with color drawings or photographs varieties that exist at those present moments in time. When I look at the publication called “Beans Of New York. I don’t see most of those varieties in circulation. Most of them have never passed through my hands. I don’t see listings for them in the Seed Savers yearbook or in posts on Facebook groups. Could these varieties have been renamed and are still around. Maybe, but I think not likely. I hope all growers of heirloom and old varieties today will feel responsible for what we collectively have taken on to grow and to posses.

It is one of my greatest hopes that all the varieties that have been passed on to growers through this bean network. Will be stewarded if not for the rest of their lives, will be passed on to others to grow and steward them. Just as we joy in all that we have today. The growers of the future will be glad we saved.

Some of the bean on this list I don't know if they are pole, bush or semi runner. The Dana Manchester beans were collected I believe somewhere in Africa. I will probably write to Dana and ask if he knows the growth habit. Most of the rest of them are likely pole beans.

Come to think of it I do know just about which one are pole beans. I'll mark them.

Since falling down the bean hole... I went through the grow network beans, found 40 options, matched them up with the priority list and nope, not one matches. I will now research the priority list and see which ones I could possibly grow!!

Well, as of today I have no idea what is officially going on with the mail strike. Yesterday I saw a huge picket line of carriers on a main street, but the news is full of conflicting information. And I found mail in my box today. Looks like nobody seems to know what's going on, so I plan to go to the nearest postal outlet shortly to talk to someone. But if there was ever a good time for a strike as a seed seller, this is about it. The season is nearly finished for me too @Blue-Jay so I can thank my lucky stars for that. 💫

Blue-Jay, please tell me about the priority list. I requested my network beans before the list was finalized and shared this year. Having been reminded of the list (Thank you, Vanalpaca!), I did some reviewing of both the network and the for sale bean lists on your website. Some priority varieties don't seem to appear at all. Others are on the for sale list and/or grown quite recently. Maybe I'm the only one with this question, or there is a description/discussion somewhere I just haven't stumbled on. What is the intent of the priority list, and how are they chosen?

there is a difference between the network beans and the other beans that @Blue-Jay has for sale.

the for sale beans are the first pages that are alphabetical in order (i'm not sure if he has several sections in this as it seems like he used to have some on the end, but that could be my memory playing tricks on me :) ).

the network beans are on their own pages (numbered 1 - 11, plus the Network page itself which describes the LEBN :) aka these bean threads here).

ah, now i see what was making me think of the sections, in the network bean pages on page 10 there is the beginning of the Will Bonsall collection) [ @Blue-Jay you have this in the Network page as starting on page 9 not page 10]

What did you use for a barrier. I suppose I could use some of my deer fence netting.....??? We had a game camera up last summer and saw opossums and bunny rabbits in garden as well as a ground hog den showed up. Never saw the ground hog on camera.
Honestly many years ago my hubby had brought home two new rolls of aluminum soffit destined for the dumpster. I unrolled one of them and made a barrier around the beans. Didn't look very pretty but it worked.

I usually have beans in the ground at this point but we're having some weird weather. Last night temperatures dropped to 37° and the highs have been in the upper 50s to low 60s. Looks like this cold snap will last until at least mid-week. I guess that will give me a few more days to make planting decisions.

I planted beans 4 days apart. The second planting did not grow. It's been a cold week now. The first planting is doing well. Hit the higher temps with that one. I'm ready to dig up the second planting and see where it's at!

Thanks for responding to my question. I understand the difference between 'for sale" and "network". But in the priority list posted by Blue-Jay on 1/1/2025, and referenced in Vanalpaca's post #341, the first 8 varieties are listed neither in the network nor sales list. Also not in the Will Bonsall collection. I didn't get through the entire list, but many others fall in the same category. Are these beans new to Blue-Jay's collection, and just haven't been placed on either list yet?
