It sounds burdensome. But how can a tariff be assigned to a parcel that has no value assigned, or price charged, by the sender or recipient? Will tariffs be charged on gifts sent to family or friends across the border(s)?
I wonder the same thing myself. The app works through AI and apparently it will assess value based on a photo and info it asks you to plug in, it may even ask for your estimate of it's value. That still doesn't address the issue though of how you'd quote someone a price on parcel when your dependent on Zonos calculations, it would have to be a guess. Yes, the tariffs seem to apply in all cases, even family and friends parcels. The charges are on the part of the sender as far as I know.

I'm just hoping that by the time I'm ready to mail Bluejay his seeds the system is lifted. That's probably not likely, but I'm holding out hope.

For some days, several European post carriers did not send anymore any parcels to the U.S. Now, the Swiss post is only proceeding parcels with the declaration "present" and a maximum value of USD 100 to the U.S. and the full tariffs must be paid regardless that it is a gift for the family or friends. But I don't know what happens if the value declaration is zero and what is the new administrative burden for sending a present.

So if this system is not lifted by the time you send me beans wrapped in a plain brown paper package. What photo will you give AI to represent the contents of your package? Do you have a cassette tape?

If I can do it without the photo, I will, I think that's an option. Whatever the case, I'll find a crafty way to make sure the beans get to you @Blue-Jay! I've got a wily mind like that. ;)

My apologies to any other international network growers, that I may not be correct about the Zonos App, it may just be a Canadian situation. It's possible other countries have different postal arrangements with the US. When I saw that Zonos is Australian based, I made the assumption it applied to all countries outside the US wanting to ship there.

Curly beans this year. For the life of me I can only vaguely recall the tag tonight, 'Aloisia Mar....' something. Can't think of it, and google can't either. Whatever the name, it is such a pretty bean. I'll update this post once I look at the tag.

I assume it's Aloisia Marmoriert.

Aloisia is a very old female first name with origin in Old High German, and "marmoriert" means marbled.

To my knowledge there is also an Aloisia Schwarz (=Black) which has green pods and black seeds (and is curled, too). It's a variety of the many Kipfler beans of Styria.

I was holding off on ordering a book from Ireland due to the tariffs and now I've discovered that the seller has halted all deliveries to the US. Sad times indeed.

Blue Tip and Otis/Ottis Stuart are pretty much finished. They were the first to produce and I've harvested a fair amount of seed from each. Avalon has had me second guessing myself as I keep getting a completely different seed variation in the harvest. Had myself convinced that I'd just dropped a pod in the wrong container, but evidently not. Also have two pods that are a dark purple and not streaked like the others.

Coal Camp has been a pleasant surprise as I received five seeds in 2020 and only managed to harvest eleven seeds, which ended up misplaced. This year it it very prolific, reaching out to intertwine with nearby varieties and producing a range of seed from gray to beautiful blue!

Rio Zape and Rose should easily be ready to harvest by the end of the month but September Blue has me a bit nervous. It has several pods but they're not filled out yet. Railroad, Pixie and Schwarze Witwe are my recent favorites due to their coloration.

So far the only variety that I'm certain I won't be able to return is Woodboogie. I put it and two others labeled as half-runners in a bed in my old garden and all have really struggled. Guess that's a sign that I really need to rejuvenate the soil in that bed. I will grow it again next year and hope for better results.

I have got a handful of unknown bean seeds where it was told to me that they should come from Stryria. As all seeds have been round and brown with black speckles, I could only distinguish three varieties of seeds for sure. But I suspect that there must be more as I have already four different varieties of pods. One is this variety with moon-like pods. They are currently 5cm / 2 inch long. I have no clue what it could be. I don't assume it's a Kipfler variety because the pods are flat and not round like Kipfler. And they are more curled than "Marmorierter Mond". But they are very beautiful.
