i did go out and pick some beans today even if i was sticking to the top of the garden itself. now they are all spread out and drying in the sun and the breeze as much as they can before i have to bring them in tonight. in a half hour i'll go out and give them a stir to help them along a bit more.

I am just loving this new bean, Siebenbürgen-Kärnten! It's looking pink right now, but I can see it's color shifting quickly to a salmon shade. The first pods I opened are already distinct from the latest ones I've shelled. I had a single seed left to grow this year after bombing with it last year! I had good luck and the plant grew well, though it was a bit crowded by a nearby sunchoke so I suspect it didn't produce as much as it could have. Needless to say, I have many more seeds to replant next year! It is later maturing, but with a better head start I'm sure it would finish here in better time.

All the pods I've shelled so far, as well as all the dried garden plants, got wood chipper-ed and I spread the crumbs across the beds that I thought needed them most.

This is where we're at now. I'm hoping to finish the bean shelling this week and get everything through the chipper and spread before the snow flies.

Now that you have a photo ot them together. I can see the margins of where the pink meets the white on Tunny is more irregular. I had to change my mind on this one. The pattern of Siebenbürgen-Kärnten is similar to Ukrainian Pole or Kroatische.

The shelling continues and I'm taking mental notes as I go along. I must say, the 'Dakota Bumble' bush beans are just blowing me away with their health and production, especially considering I really crowded them in a small grow box. The pods are really hard, but you can tell they will resist bad weather well.

Almost all of mine are podded too. An untimely early frost forced taking in all remaining mature pods for seeds to dry fully indoors. And those that were not yet at that stage, went to the kitchen.

Advice I got from Decoy (originally Russ) was this - if in dire need for seeds, pull up and dry whole plants indoors. As frost threatened very early this year, I did that and as a result now have several fully mature pods that were still being nurtured while the whole plants died down on newspaper in the hall. This has saved my Panzaredda (and another variety) that otherwise would not have produced anything. Decoy was kind enough to give me some of her precious Panzaredda seeds which were fully matured on the vine. So I can directly compare to what the dried down whole plants have produced, and they look practically identical. Thank you for that advice, it really works.

I wish I had gotten a picture of them freshly shelled, they've lost a bit of brightness in the last month sitting dried, but my crop of network bean 'Blaugraue' this year has been really good. Complete turnaround from last year's feeble attempt. Such a fabulous bean variety, productive, so easy to shell, beautiful seed formation, checks all the boxes. Just love this bean.

Early this morning 10-24-2025 we had a killing frost. Growing season is now over. This was almost three weeks later than many of our October frosts I've seen in the past 10 years.
