Agreed. Buy something decent, not the cheapest on the market, like this one:
They are sold to keep water liquid for livestock, BUT, I don't trust my livestock to keep from chewing on them, so I don't use them in a water tank in the winter.
But, you are only keeping a supply of water, much different.
You have had a true cold stretch. You wouldn't have much ice on top if this was just overnight.
We have had enough cold to freeze the soil.
You might also consider getting (livestock, not furnace) pine pellets.
When your animals are dry they are warm.
I have used them for years and they are not expensive.
Most animals urinate in the same place, so you can spot clean and not use all of your bedding.
My QH swamps his stall in the winter and if I put down straw it's sloppy the next day.

All thawed out today, high of 67F. I’m sure glad WINTER went back home! But WINTER will try to sneak back this weekend, back down in the 20’s. WINTER leaves again on Monday and rain moves in.

Sheba enjoyed basking in the warm sun.

She heard something and jumped to her feet barking. Then she sat down to keep watch.

Sentry and Buford were in the middle field, also laid out in the warm sun.

I sat in the grass and both dogs got ear rubs and tummy rubs.

As others mentioned “they got stuff for that”. No worse than it gets down there, this bucket heater will keep that small tank from freezing.
Keep scrolling down and they have larger ones as well for 100 to 300 gallon tanks. You dont need that much heat though. And if you don’t want to run it continually put it on a timer.

Off topic.

How are you @Alasgun ☺️ :frow I haven't seen you in a long time and I hope you're well

I’m giving a link to my journal on BYH. I’ve gone from freezing to a monsoon and it ain’t over yet. So far, 5 inches of rain. Supposed to keep raining until Thursday morning.

I posted lots of pictures of my flooded farm. LOL I need a boat!
