Hey GardenGirl, these are what I bought today -- Ruby Moon Mix and Fantasia Mix. I love to have a variety for cutting. There are a lot of sunflowers out there to choose from!

Garden Ornament
I really like them and my DS who was 2 1/2 last year when I got him into them loved how the birds visited his garden in the fall. He calls them sunny flowers and remembered them this year when I started to look at seed catalogs. He wanted ones that were different from the yellows he grew last year though. We did have a dark red one that was just for fun to see if it would grow and they were beautiful. I think I'll see if our local green market has any out yet. If all else fails we are at Lowe's and Home Depot for kids workshops almost each weekend, so we'll look there. 
Never thought of the bird seed though. Chickens don't leave the birdseed on the ground too long so we never noticed if they germinated or not.
