Maybe winter suet cakes would help you manage to get a pic of this elusive lil bird. Would help with ID.

the Blue Heron and Sharpshinned Hawk was above the road in front of the house yesterday. I don't know why the hawk was so riled up about a heron. I think Big Blue was about to land and say, "Okay, you want some of this? I'll smack you with my 6 foot wingspan and this beak can go straight through you, you little twerp!" Where's that professor? But, surely herons don't go into trees to raid hawk nests ..?

The Sharpshinneds were back recently. In fact, they haven't gone away. It seems that they must have a nest very nearby and they don't mind letting you know about it!

The incident began in the tree across the road and involved a pair of the hawks and a crow. After awhile, the engagement came to our side of the road and continued until dark. I think that the crow escaped as darkness deepened. A hawk was back the next day making noise — several neighbors were spending time outdoors and pointing into the nearest tree during the crow conflict which was especially dramatic.

Around here the crows are noisy and huge trouble makers. They seem to search the area for territory they claim to be theirs. The hawks usually ignore them.. however hawks are very good hunters and always follow where the food seems to be abundant this time of year. Never have I seen any hawks and crows in a battle like you described. They seemed really aggressive. Wonder if they were guarding a nest?

raising a ruckus! it is very interesting to me to see several very tiny birds going after a crow.

Surprising that you would show up here just before I thought to, @ducks4you . No definitive answer to your question but I would imagine they would.

I was just listening to a recording in All About Birds, Cornell. Coming back into the house after hearing a House Finch in the backyard.

They have finally arrived at the northern boundary of their range.
