Looking at the Extension info:
1/2#/square foot appears to be a reasonable, expected yield of marketable squash for something like Butternut. That was an average for several organic farms.
Of course, each squash plant takes up quite a lot of room. A "buffer area" around the garden is essentially wasted space. A garden of 1,000 square feet might not yield 500# of squash. Then again, squash for processing as animal feed should not require the standards of those sold in market bins.
