Cottonwood Rose?

I am hoping someone may be able to help us with a bit of a debate here! So where we live in the South, a lot of flowers and trees go by different names. For instance, it took some digging to find that what people call a "tulip tree" is actually a Chinese Magnolia (i know there is also a Tulip Poplar and a Southern Magmolia here as well).

The current question remains as to what exactly a "cottonwood rose" is? Can anyone help me figure out what this nickname may be for? It would be much appreciated!

Could it possibly be a Confederate rose, Hibiscus mutabilis? AKA cotton rose, among a few others.

@bid - This was actually a great help! My mother in law said yes, it went between pink and white as the description of the Confederate Rose said. I think we have this "nicknamed" rose solved!

Do you happen to know what the flower below is? This, everyone apparently calls "prickly pear" yet that is a cactus from what I am aware of. This flower is on a small, rose-like bush and has thick thorns.
