Elephant Ear Question

Oh you brutes! It's bad enough people are harvesting the poor elephants tusks! Now you're planting their ears! Where will this madness end???

I am not planting elephant ears, I much prefer eating them.

Do these plants grow from tubers? Do you find them only in the spring?

I found mine at Walmart about a month or two ago. I imagine they'd still have them. Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.

I'm getting excited about these plants. I just googled them and there is one called "Mojito" that I really like. Maybe nex weekend I can go to a couple of nurseries to see if I find any.

People do eat them, if you go to a store with large Latino custmer base, its called Taro.

According to this, Taro and Elephant ear are related but are not the same thing. I wouldn't eat elephant ear without doing a lot of research. I think even Taro is poisonous if not cooked right.

I don't know if they are edible or not, but taro is a food made from the root, so if elephant ears are edible it would not be the leaves you eat.

I grew a black elephant ear plant once. I don't remember the leaves having sharp anything. Of course, I didn't put them on my tongue.

Yes, I did. I was extrapolating from the family tie that most likely the EE root would be eaten -- if anything was.
