One aspect of living in a town that shares space with a liberal art university is that the artistic vibrations that eminate from the persons that live here are always finding unusual methods of expression. Here is an example my DW sent me, and she organized about 50 of them around town, each one an effort by an individual artist.

This one is in honor of a wood carver here named Tim Tingle, who has carved what we call Tinglewood in the local park. You can google tinglewood.

I am pretty sure my wife did the hydrant. I will have to ask, but that risks me being told that I was not paying attention when she told me about it so bear with me.

the heavy drinkers in town are going to have some wild stories of late night rambles and odd faces during public urination. also, perhaps the doggies will start tinkling on their owners as they sleep? the possibilities are kinda endless...

Love them! In parts of San Jose CA, some of the big gray utility boxes on corners, have pretty designs on them. At least they are not "tagged" by the idiots that love to deface everything.

i've seen them painted in white someplaces. in the winter they'd get plenty of snow there so they also went around and marked them with flags in the winter in case they were needed.
I can see a pole to find them under the snow. I am glad I do not have to think about snow issues here. Ice is our occasional worry. We had 1/4"of frozen precip not too long ago that nshut down Birmingham for 3 days. They still call the event "Snowmaggedon".

@Carol Dee was it you that mentioned liking gourds? I had to help DW put up flag brackets at her store today and saw one of her gourds that started what she refers to as "Gar Wars" with some other gourd artists. She made this gourd with images of the prehistoric creatures that are still with us in the lower little cahaba river. It has a cahaba lily as well, sort of a rare lily. I thought you might like to see it. Its in the bathroom which makes me laugh. Some others too.

quite the talent!
Better than me by far. The story behind the gar gourd was a canoe trip one summer. We were in a thin rocky shoals area that was bubbling rushing water and a really big female gar was splashing in the thin water with her back exposed. DW thought she was stuck because the little gar were darting about at will. So there she goes, paddle in hand, determined to flip that poor gar back into deeper water. All we could do was yell NO -GAR SEX! Priceless.
