People think groundhogs can't climb. I've seen one treed by a dog before too. In that case it also seemed unlikely that they would be able to get together. But a 12 gauge full choke turkey load changed that outcome. Luckily I was in a place I could do that, not everybody is.

My dog treed a cat, on a poplar tree with the lowest limb 20 feet above the cats head. It took a few hours, but eventually muscle failure allowed them to meet and discuss things.
 
If I brought my 20 out, think my wife’s dog would have soiled himself. In general, he’s a big softy afraid of everything (what is funny is he’s 100# of solid muscle with extremely strong jaw muscles) except GROUNDHOGS.

i've seen them climb the fences here, but it isn't often.

we don't have trees they seem to favor at all. it would make it much easier to hit them with the air rifle if they were to be doing that.
