It's another moose season for us. Last year we didn't get many moose visitors.
But this year we have a mama and twins hanging around.
I looked out the front window last Wednesday and there they were, browsing on the landscape. Why they prefer eating trees that were planted versus the wild stuff out there is a puzzle, maybe just enjoying a break from the same old PB&J?
It is sort of a rule that I can't take a picture of a moose that isn't blurry...it's a witness protection kind of deal...
They moved to the driveway and enjoyed the apple leaves. Also preventing me from leaving for work. This mama is a little crabby... doesn't like the (foolhardy) paparazzi taking pictures of her kids.
It was an Oh Crap moment when she put her hackles up and started my way.
I skedaddled behind the wood pile and the shed, keeping solid objects between us.
You can see her keeping an eye on me.
She continued staring at the house for about 5 minutes after I went in.
Eventually they moved on to the neighbors, mostly I think because I kept shouting "hey! the neighbors have alfalfa and it's open!" Hah. Just kidding.
I was able to finally leave for work.
Later that afternoon they were back, in fact when I got home the kids were in the driveway munching the apple trees. I couldn't see mama, and I hated to make anybody upset by driving past them, but I was soaked from working in the rain and too tired to wait them out, so I very slowly pulled into the driveway.
Happily the twins scampered off to tattle to mom and I went inside.
Mom showed up a bit later in back, hanging out by the animals. I store a few bales of Lukes (horse) alfalfa in the empty stall of Huckleberrys (mini mule ) shelter.
She could smell it and was cogitating on how she might get to it, and Huckleberry was cursing me for putting it in his pen. He hid behind the shelter, Luke kept a very alert eye on Mama. Horses (and mini mules) find moose very alarming, there is not a lot of love flowing back and forth there.
See Luke watching? He's a decent sized horse, 1000 pounds and 15.2 for all you horse folks, and there is only about 30 feet separating them, but he looks so little in comparison.
She gave up on the alfalfa idea and decided to see if there was a snack in the bird feeders. Nope. The bird attendant has dropped the ball.
Oh! Gotta itch!
