EVA HAS FRIENDS!!!


I have a friend who has a small herd of angus & angus-X. We had talked a WHILE back about switching heifers for a little while. He would come get Eva and take her back to his farm to meet his bull, and I would let him bring his heifer over to keep her away from his bull until she was old enough to breed.
Well.... thing went like things sometimes do and months passed without either of us bringing it up again.
Yesterday I got a text asking if I still had room for a couple of heifers (a COUPLE??)... I texted back that I thought so and quickly got another text saying that they were loaded and on the way.
I ran out and put Eva in her stall, a few minutes later they pulled up and we unloaded 2 girls. One is about a year old and (most likely) bred. The other is just weaning.

Yay for Eva! I don't want the two new girls to feel bad, but Eva is clearly the beauty of the group.

Will you be getting her bred this year?

Hopefully she is already bred. I had the AI guy out this past Wednesday.
If I had any idea all of this was going to take place 4 days later I would have waited. I hope the excitement isn't going to mess up Wed's work.

And, thank you. I'm kinda partial to her looks over theirs...
Eva looks SO small and delicate next to them. I kept telling her "You're jersey is showing". The little visitor is almost her size and the yearling is way bigger. They are sweet, but such CHUNKS compared to Eva.

So no point in Eva going out there now, most likely. I hope the AI worked. That is funny he snuck in a two-fer. How long will they be visiting? I take it that cows make friends much quicker and easier than horses and some other animals? I just wondered if they needed any transition to get used to each other first.

Journey11, it is more likely that Eva is going to be sad when they leave. Cattle are herding animals and one alone is not always the happiest. This is actually a good thing for Eva. If Cane can keep getting little ones -- and her pasture can support them -- Eva should be happy. Cane, since there is no trade-off with breeding, you might consider a fee for pasture use. It may just be excess pasture, but the owner isn't buying/providing feed for his animals.

Oh Boy, you should have seen how the yearling steers reacted to Dad bringing in a new bull.

I don't remember how many there were but that full-grown bull was having some trouble. Dad had to go in with the pitchfork a couple of times to help him get out of the corral.

The 'plan' is for the little one to stay for about a year - till she is old enough to breed. By that time, Eva will (I hope) have a calf of her own to keep her company.

Jeff felt so bad about the short notice that he volunteered to come back this Sat and help clean up & expand the fence lines in the south pasture. He's also provided a big round bale for them all to work on and will be bringing feed for his girls and more hay now and then.

I've gotten real comfortable with the dynamics of having just me and Eva out there. It's exciting to get to see her 'being a cow' with other cows. I'm looking forward to the chance to put a little 'finish' on them before they go home again. Drop off a couple of 'touchable most of the time' cows - take home a couple of halter broke, lead-able, 'in your pocket' cows.

The more I think about it, the better I'm liking the idea.

Oh you are going to have fun spoiling those new girls! I love cows, but decided to go with sheep-I can have more because they are smaller than cows!

Eva has a nice face and it looks Jersey to me. I'm sure you know, if you choose, you can milk once a day. Just wondering, do you have a milking machine, or if are you're going to hand milk.

A Jersey male friend would be great, when she's ready.
