Where I grew up 1 acre was a farm, city lot about size of postage stamp.

Same here. The yards weren't barely big enough to put a lawnmower in. The front was divided by the sidewalk with the 2 strips of concrete to the side for the driveway. The actual back yard was bigger....but a swing set in it would shrink it considerably.

That sounds great, got any fruit or nut trees? If not, then you have room to grow them!

I planted 10 of those Arbor Day trees back in 2012. Only 1 survived. Our ground on the acre has several different eco-environments. Some things we plant...die. Many things we plant...die.
I have managed to get strawberries to grow out in front of the house though.
As we see it.....this whole places is just one big experiment. So far...we have much success in...

chickens/eggs
tomatoes
strawberries
sweet potatoes
okra
corn
sun flowers
compost
green beans
turnips
herbs (although I managed to kill 4 comfrey plants)
cabbage
green peppers
summer squashes
roses (only in certain places)

Stuff we cannot seem to grow;

white potatoes
trees (new plantings)
broccoli
rhubarb
carrots
peas
lettuce
onion

Our native plants and trees consist of;

Sweet gum
hickory
cedar
mulberry
red bud and dog wood

poison ivy
privet (I think)
honeysuckle -wild
lots of thorny vines

One can barely walk in the undergrowth when I venture out back to round up chickens on the neighbors property.

We have a heavy red clay soil too.

Filbert?

Yesterday was Filbert Day, according to the French Revolutionary calendar. Where did they come up with that thing, made from the whole cloth, evidently? (Unlike more sensible names for days.)

We use the words interchangeably, filbert and hazelnut. Hazelnuts are probably what most would prefer. Only these nut trees do well here altho walnuts can provide dense, sticky shade and food for the squirrels ...

Hazelnuts are very small trees and suitable for yards. I don't know why they aren't more commonly grown.
