The story that I have read is that the Japanese didn't care for tomatoes. You know, it may have been partly a climate problem, sorta like @flowerbug 's location and tomato growing problems.
Anyway, several decades ago the Japanese agriculturalists came up with some super sweet varieties. Beefsteak size cannot be as sweet, the skin will break. I still should try some Japanese beefsteaks. I'm sure that the US popularity of some of those cherries has led to development of similar varieties in this country and others.

. Anyways they are really sweet and tasty. Also growing sweet 100s as usual. I think there may also be a spin off called sweet millions which I have to try for sure.
