Hi,

I have two very old Pecan trees. These were probably planted 40 years ago, maybe longer. These were placed here by the University, NMSU, to be identified later and reported on their characteristics. So these were 'test' pecans.

One does a very elongated fruit, but the tree will not let go of the fruit; one end of the pecan is typically suffering from a loss of meat or water...so this one has been my "chicken and rabbit" treat tree. However, it takes a good windstorm to get them down, and often it can take two seasons to rid the tree of the fruit.

The other one, my favorite, does a round fruit with nice plump pecans. This tree will suddenly drop all of its fruit in less than a few weeks time....and..... today it started! Only a few, but looking up they are all starting to crack open! Wooo Hooo!!!!!

I have waited all Season since both of these trees are ancient trees and they generally skip every other year. I have been buying pecans this summer!!!! Uggh! :th

Take a looksie!

Hey those look cool.

To much to work with here! LOL

Can I suspect that the middle finger was injured by that tool in the third picture?

I think pecan trees are beautiful. I don't think they should be too old. I thought they began producing at 7 years.

Yeah, that's right, it takes 7 years to start producing fruit.

Mine are in excess! These were planted just as I was being born 40+ years at least. (not to make it sound like I am less than 40 LOL)

I have an old large pecan tree in my front yard and would like to start harvesting the pecans (instead of hubby mowing them) . So my ? is how do you crack them and store them? I know I may have to invest in a pecan crusher thing, but how do you do it?
