Hi,
I have two very old Pecan trees. These were probably planted 40 years ago, maybe longer. These were placed here by the University, NMSU, to be identified later and reported on their characteristics. So these were 'test' pecans.
One does a very elongated fruit, but the tree will not let go of the fruit; one end of the pecan is typically suffering from a loss of meat or water...so this one has been my "chicken and rabbit" treat tree. However, it takes a good windstorm to get them down, and often it can take two seasons to rid the tree of the fruit.
The other one, my favorite, does a round fruit with nice plump pecans. This tree will suddenly drop all of its fruit in less than a few weeks time....and..... today it started! Only a few, but looking up they are all starting to crack open! Wooo Hooo!!!!!
I have waited all Season since both of these trees are ancient trees and they generally skip every other year. I have been buying pecans this summer!!!! Uggh!
Take a looksie!
Oh the recipes!
