My heritage tomatoes are getting started. These are the riesentraube variety, but I also have a few candyland mini currant tomato plants coming up from saved seeds. Somehow watching plants grow from seed to blossoms to fruit never gets old!

when i was weeding around some of the tomato plants yesterday it reminds me of how much i love the smell of growing tomato plants. :)

and then too there was also some shade as they have grown up to be taller than the large tomato cages.

a very pleasant microclimate there with the scent and the shade. :) :) :)

Rather than start another tomato thread –– and complain –– Imma gonna complain here. About ...

Large Red Cherry <-> Red Cherry Large ... They aren't the same from 3 trials! There's more to the story and I have had years of bothering to buy "Large Red Cherry" seed going back to the '70's, altho I discontinued until DW thought that they were the best for her salsa. Well, I don't want to compromise her making that !

Personally, I felt that this heirloom cherry was just a little seedy and there were other choices. Because of DW, I continued buying seed until what was on the garden center racks were packets that said, "Red Cherry Large." Okay ... that was 2023. Those were smaller and, I actually thought better flavored ... DW wasn't happy with them. In 2024, I bought new seed from a different company, they were the same Red Cherry Large ... then, she really wasn't happy ... This year, 2025, I found Mountain Valley Seed Co had a "Large Red Cherry." Okay, Got It! The dang things are plums!

Flavor fine ... she's not happy  . I guess that the quest for the original will continue ... Dang, ya know, if this was a hybrid –– the company doing the breeding of the variety would probably feel obligated to maintain similar appearance and flavor. BTW, I found a Super Sweet 100 plant at a garden center late when it was obvious that I had again failed to find the right seed. She will be modestly pleased with that and has already thanked me. It still isn't quite what she wants and we know it. Weeellll, production from the 2 "Large Red Cherry" plants better not go to waste!

There is one company brand here on the racks, I can't think of the name off the top of my head, that sells 'Large Red Cherry'. It's the only vendor that I've ever seen offer it with that specific name, so, around here anyway, it's rare. I've always wondered about that variety; on the one hand so rare, and on the other such a very vague name, almost too vague. Nearly bought it a few times. Interesting that it is indeed a very distinct and recognizable cherry tomato, unlike others you've tried. That name is a bit misleading!
