What Did You Do In The Garden?

I finished mulching everything. Went to our local nursery to get pole beans (I know I should plant from seed but I have a gift cert.) and mentioned that my kale wasn't growing. They're about 2-3 inches tall and one of them made a flower head! They gave me another 6 pack to replace it. Now I'll have around 11 kale plants! The Kentucy Wonder pole beans had 11 starts in the 6 pack. So I'm happy.

Got more seeds planted to trays the other day...took only 3 days for the pak choi to spring up. Got maters and sweet peppers transplanted to foam cups, need to do the same with the hot peppers.

Got my potting table moved to the sunshine so I can use it for a hardening off/grow table soon.

Got more compost materials moved to one of the raised beds, got the other one planted to spuds.

Sugar snap peas had very poor germination, though they had been presoaked. Sourced them differently this year but will go back to the prior source next year, if the Lord wills it.

Today I finally pruned my seven apple trees.
It's very late, I should have had it done before March, so I will be dealing with exuberant growth at the cuts and a lot of waterspouts.
But it's done, and I'll worry about the overgrowth in August.

If you put apple tree branches in vase of water they will flower

but so nice to see progress in getting rid of that pesky weed... stepping on a sticker in the sand is one of the worst experiences i recall as a kid at the beach.

I need to report that I had an allergic reaction to the burdock that I pulled from a patch in the North Pasture on Sunday!! DH is my hero bc he remembered that I had a bar of poison ivy oatmeal soap. I took a shower with it and the welts on my chest and back went away!!! I am home today to get the other patch out there, but I will be dressing differently. I plan to wear my lined hooded sweatshirt, new gloves and safety glasses. I must have rubbed my left eye. It was tearing ALL Sunday evening and I did a loan closing with a bloodshot eye yesterday. Better today.
I am determined to finish clearing the North Pasture. There is only one more patch to get after that, south of the garage and bordering our neighbor's yard, and the property is clear of 2017 burdock that went to seed.
This gives me 3 months to poison the 2nd year burdock that has come up. You can TELL bc it starts sprouting with the spring bulbs. I intend to poison and cover with soiled stall bedding to keep my horses away from it.
I WILL get my camera out to give you all a better idea.
I started this war 4 years ago and I will NEVER use a brush mower on it again!!!!!!!

I planted seeds, instead of removing them.
This year I have picked up every burr that I could see and if I missed them and I am walking by, I take the time to pick them up,
I burn what goes in the wheelbarrow, but any that attach to my sneakers get tossed in the garbage. Better they grow in a garbage pile than in my yard.
Good news, though, NO horsey dreadlocks last Fall!!!!

Finally, as April winds down ... I can say that I have done something in the garden!

Have the little dahlia garden planted. Right at 100 tubers in the ground.

It was a very warm day. First day above 70°f since September, 2017! Of course, the ground isn't so warm so the dahlias may lay around and do nothing for a few weeks. I may need to lay around and do nothing tomorrow ... oooh!

i drove 7hrs today. rainy day in the forecast and i was tired from past several days of stuff outside and a break was welcome. we went up north to pick up some things.

there's still snow on the ground up there and some of the lakes were still frozen over.

always glad to be back home.

[Gardening with Rabbits]

Saturday DS and I made 3 trips to the dump and today I loaded old shingles from the rabbit hutch we tore down into the truck to take to the dump. I took the plastic off the bottom of the rabbit hutch and bought some burlap to put on the end of the hutch to block sun on the end of the hutch. The trees have no leaves to give shade yet. I fertilized all the plants in the greenhouse and I transplanted the last of the peppers. I have a few kale and collards to transplant tomorrow. I am getting in shape, but sore.
