What did YOU do in your garden today :P

Put straw down on part of garden. Planted butternut squash.

. . .@digitS' you mean I'm not supposed to dry the roots first? Oops. I am only pulling a few at a time, so thought I'd dry the roots until I got enough to make roasting them worthwhile. The root roasting and making wine is new to me. I got the jelly and tea thing down real good.

For caffeinated replacement for coffee, try yaupon. yoe-PON' It is a small tree/shrub that grows out in the woods. Pick the leaves, dry, toast lightly and brew up a pot of tea for your caffeine jolt.
@baymule , no I'm supposed to cut out caffeine. Actually, I've gotten 2 lines of advice from the medicos on avoiding the jolt to the stomach. Zero it out and just don't drink coffee black. I decided on a middle road and just try to drink more decaf in a blend than caffeinated. Wild-harvesting the decaf part would cut down on expenses. Besides, I like chicory in the commercial brand I've tried. Dandelion is a chicory.

Drying sounds reasonable. Where's @hoodat ?

Fertilized and mulched the potatoes.

I realized yesterday that some of the plants have flower buds! I think I fertilized too late in '13 and that was one reason for sub-par yield. Maybe I'm a little late again. There was enough compost for mulching and I will continue watching the plants to be sure that no tubers show up on the surface.

Finished caging the tomatoes and pruned the tomatoes. Transplanted a volunteer tomato, two volunteer basils, and three volunteer marigolds. Trimmed a tree branch that was hitting the roof of my chicken run, and thinned some of the apples. I need to finish thinning the apples, they are pretty thick this year. Also prepared the ground where I'll plant my last round of corn late this coming week.

Didn't get much done outside today because I had strawberry freezer jam to make. Came out with 17 pints. I hated to be inside on this glorious day, but the strawberries don't hang around long.

I did weed out the pepper patch and planted 5 mild banana peppers that my mom gave me and one more tomato plant, a Mortgage Lifter my neighbor gave me.

Corn and beans are starting to come up.

Ava picked some blueberries. They're just coming on now.

I don't know if it counts!

I took the plastic film off the hoops over 2 of the beds in the backyard and hauled it off to the dump. A section 12' by 16' was cut out and saved for a hoopie next year.

Yes, there is still one of those in the backyard. It's sole purpose is providing some afternoon shade. It's in the backyard sweet spot but the late afternoon sunshine is too intense at this time of year.

I finally finished planting the garden this weekend! Hoop house #1 has tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and sweet potatoes (not visible except the wilted ones in the pot that I don't have room for)

The other house has melon, squash, and corn. I just put corn seed in, and melon and squash transplants are tiny:

Man, was it hot in there today!

Planted pumpkins, acorn squash, gourds.

Rained last night so once things dry up, will go back to weeding.

Looks like the weeds certainly won't be getting the best of you. Nice setup! :thumbsup

The rain held off, so I hoed all the tiny weeds in the big garden today. Didn't take much more than an hour altogether. Off to a good start!
