What tomatoes are you growing this year?

Have I already said I would?! In 2017?

Steve, aren't you planting Orange Woodle (or something like that)?

Mary

Woodle Orange. I've been curious about what it should have been if it hadn't turned out to be a "woodle witz" ;). Marshall convinced me to change the name to The Witz. I'm happy with it not being what it was supposed to be but maybe I should grow the Woodle Orange. The little offspring might like to share some space with its relative.

Steve ;)

Hi there,
I was wondering what tomatoes you all are growing this year.
I will be growing Gardeners delight, Cristal, San Marzano, Chocolate cherry and Corazon beefsteak tomatoes.
Has anyone else ever grow any of these varieties?
I will grow 2 plants of each variety.
I can't stand eating tomatoes.
The only way I will eat them is in soups or sauces, one of the reason I am growing,
San Marzano. I read they are good for making pasata and bottling.
I suppose I can also freeze the tomatoes or bottle the spare tomatoes.
Or I can simply give them away.
I think the only reason I grow them is because I have it in my head,
That you have to grow tomatoes in your polytunnel!
Goodluck,
Fionn.

I am picky about raw fresh tomatoes. If they are the kind I like I will eat them, but last year found out how easy it was to make spaghetti sauce. I put in onions, garlic, peppers and used all kinds of tomatoes. I put it in gallon freezer bags and froze them flat as a pancake. I used all of the sacks. I may have one left buried. I was very happy doing this and I made stewed tomatoes and froze those in quart bags. I really like the San Marzano because of what you said and they produce and produce and produce. I did grow Gardener's Delight and they were good. I have not decided yet exactly what I am planting.

I've heard that San Marzano isn't the same if it isn't grown in the Italian countryside. I've never even seen one much less ate one so I can't say but would like to see if they are really as sweet as people say.

To me, they have better flavor than Roma. To me, Roma have a flat flavor.

The Roma's I buy in the store are definitely flavorless but then again so are the rest of the cold storage ripened tomatoes. Nothing like a vine ripened tomato that never sees the inside of a refrigerator! I've heard good things about Amish paste tomatoes too.

I didn't care for Amish paste. Lack of a clear flavor.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't want a sweet tomato. Anyone know which cherry tomatoes aren't sweet? I liked the flavor of yellow pear, but they split too badly in my climate.
