Corn Thread for 2014

Ninnymary you should grow it. If I can get enough seeds collected I will send you some.

Growing glass gem this year. The critters have just about eaten it all. Not sure if I will get any. It is about 7ft tall before they break it over and eat the ears. Has been producing about 3 ears per stalk. I probably won't try corn again. Critters have been plentiful this year.

Oh, that's too bad PJN. How disappointing to watch your corn grow and then have it stolen by freeloader animals.

I know it seems like my solution to everything, but I love me a hot wire fence. Especially when you get to see those miscreants get a jolt.

I even set up a battery powered one around my garden early in the season to keep my crummy cats from using it for a litter box.

I see a lot of people around here put electric around their corn patch, a couple high strands for the deer and a low one for the coons. Nothing has bothered mine in years past or yet...

Today I cleaned the Anasazi Sweet corn and the Painted Mountain corn. I put both in labeled glass jars. I will be able to plant a bigger corn patch next year! The Oaxacan green dent corn now has brown silks. I'm going to let it all dry for seed for next year. I might have to mill some meal just to see if it will make green cornbread!

ND Sunshine sweetcorn has survived a nasty hailstorm in June and 80mph storm gusts in July although I had to stand it all back up, is now tasseling so I will start hand pollination daily. Time to power up the hot wire for the coons.
