Trip came up on the porch this morning, peering in, like he does when he wants to come inside. Normally he does this in the heat of the day, when it thunders, or in the evening when he wants a nap. None of these applied, so I went out to check on him. he was limping on his left front leg. he limped in and tried to sit/lay down, but was clearly in pain. I gently felt his leg, Beaux the puppy wanted to be in the middle of everything. Trip growled at him, DH called Beaux to him so I could proceed. I figured it was a copperhead bite.

I gave Trip a benedryl pill, a baby aspirin and 4 Arnicare pills. He slept most of the morning. He got up once to follow me outside, but turned back and went and laid back down. At 11:00 I gave him another round, he is laid out in the floor, but now he is laying on his left side, so the leg must feel better.

Last week, Paris killed a copperhead in the back yard. She slung it in two pieces. It is hilarious to watch her kill snakes. After she slung it to pieces, I got the "head" piece and tossed it where she couldn't kill it again.

Trip's upper forearm and shoulder are swollen. With all that fur, finding the bite is impossible. He just sat up, I sat in the floor and felt his leg, the knee joint is swollen. He laid over on his other side, nap time again.

Do you have cotton mouths ?
No, no body of water here. They like lakes and ponds. We have copperheads and rat snakes. Haven't seen a rattlesnake either.

@Carol Dee I've dealt with copperhead bites before. It is maybe not a common occurrence, but it happens. Polly got snake bit, Parker came in one night after I let him out for that last night-night potty with a limp and swollen foot. Now I have a goofy pup that will have to learn his snake lesson too.

I gave Trip another round at 3:00 before we left to go eat, then another dose at 7:00. His leg is still swollen, but he is walking on it. Right now he is under my recliner footrest, asleep. He must have gotten a lot of venom, usually 2, at the most, 3 rounds of benedryl and baby aspirin does it. Trip has had 4 and I'll give him more at 11:00PM. The swelling has gone down and it doesn't hurt like it did. He should be a lot better by morning.

Since Trip can't go out and play, Beaux has chosen to stay inside too. He is playing with a bone, tossing it in the air, batting it with his paw, it makes all kind of noise when it hits the wood floor. Trip hasn't batted an eyelid.

He just asked to go outside, his food is on the porch. He ate all his food, went and got a long drink of water and wanted back in. He is stretched out in the floor again. He's laying on his left side, the side he got bit on, so that is a good sign.

The AKC used to have a snake class for people living with in venous snake habit. A local venous snake was caught and put in cloth bag dogs would have a remote shock collar put on. When ever the dog sniffed at the bag with snake he would get a shock. After awhile dog was suppose to associate snake smell with pain.
